Once upon a time, there were two young boys named Noah and Caleb. They were both 12-years-old.

Noah lived in a small apartment with his mom and dad, grandparents, and their dog. Their family was traditional; his parents were born and raised in Thailand but they moved to the U.S. to live a better life.

Caleb lived in a beautiful home with his dad and younger sister. He and his dad are from Belize but moved here because his dad, Alejandro, had a better job opportunity.

Caleb was mostly afraid of moving to another country but also terrified of having a hard time fitting in because his English wasn’t great; at home, he is used to speaking Yucatec. Caleb was an extremely smart and ambitious kid but struggled because of his language barrier.

Despite Caleb's fear of fitting in and speaking a second language he didn't know all that well, he, of course, still had to participate and try his best in school. On one particular occasion, he was paired with Noah for a science experiment.

Noah was just as nervous as Caleb was because he was very shy. He was aware that Caleb didn't speak very good English, but he was willing to help him because he knows firsthand how it feels to be meek and scared.

Hi!
Hello!
Since the boys had a language barrier, the school luckily provided them with translators. The translator will also help Caleb to better understand the lesson.

The science experiment was called "spherification" or molecular gastronomy, and the class had to transform their favorite beverage into bite sized snacks.

Favorite drink Favorite movie
Favorite book Favorite game

Throughout the experiment, the translator made communication much easier. The boys realized that they had much more in common than they thought. Both of their favorite sodas were Baja Blast! Another shared interest was that their favorite movie was Pirates of the Caribbean.

After the fun and delicious experiment, Caleb and Noah wanted to continue their day together. After school, they went down to the principal's office and asked if they could borrow the phone to call their parents and ask if they could hang out at Caleb's house.
