This story is dedicated to Mrs. Milner because she is an inspiration to me!

Once upon a time, there was huge giant named Gus. He lived in the forest and was proud to be a Giant.
The winter had been very hash and he was having a hard time finding food. Gus loved to eat! It takes a lot of food to feed a Giant.
Gus had been able to find food easily until the first winter storm. "Everything is frozen solid! How will I ever find food!"

Along came a small girl named Gertrude. Gertrude loved the winter. She was walking through the forest when she heard the Giant. He looked so sad and hungry that she said," I can help you find some food! Please don't be sad. I'm happy to help!"
Gus stared at the small girl. "How could you EVER help me? I am a big, strong giant and you are a small girl. How could YOU ever help ME?" Then Gus laughed at Gertrude with rumbling belly laughs that shook the forest.

Jump, Jump, Jump!!

When Gus finished laughing, he remembered he was hungry; VERY hungry.
Gertrude said, "If you are finished laughing at me, are you ready to hear my idea? I know how you can get some fish from this frozen lake."
Gus' eyes opened wide. "Great idea, I can crash through the ice with my giant strength!" Then he started jumping and jumping. But no matter how many times he jumped, the ice would just not crack. It was frozen solid.

I'm so tired!

Gertrude waited patiently, although she did roll her eyes. When Gus was exhausted from jumping on the ice she asked, "Are you ready to hear my idea now?"
Gus could hardly lift his head. He had really worn himself out. "Sure," he relented, "why not?"

"Have you ever used a simple machine?" Gertrude asked. "I have the perfect simple machine to break through the ice to get you some fish."
Gus looked at Gertrude but she had nothing with her; no hammer, no drill, no ax. "What are you talking about?! You don't have anything with you. Are you magic?!"
"No magic," said Gertrude, "just good engineering design process."
Gus scratched his head. He had no idea what she was talking about.
