Winter woke up with the taste of cake on her tongue. “Mom, can I have a piece of cake?” “No Winter,” said her mom. “You can have some cake later.” She could not think of anything else.

Today was her birthday and she knew that she would get some of that beautiful cake that she picked out, but she wanted a piece now! This happens every year. Why couldn’t her mom just let her have a slice for breakfast? It was her birthday after all. All she wanted was a piece of cake.

“Let’s go, Winter. We are going to be late to the zoo,” said her mom. Winter put on her favorite pink and purple sneakers. She loved pink and purple, but she loved cake more! She fed her bunnies and puppies before she left. She promised them a crumb of cake later.

She brought her iPad to play Roblox on the way to the zoo, but something else was on her mind. All she wanted was a piece of cake.

At the zoo, Winter saw the cutest koalas. “Mom, can I get a koala?” “No, Winter. You have a zoo at home with your bunnies and puppies,” said her mom. Winter pouted. She really wanted a koala. She decided right then that koalas were her new, favorite animal. Winter and her mom walked by the concession stand. Her mom bought Winter a hot dog. It was yummy, but she didn’t really want it. All she wanted was a piece of cake.

After leaving the zoo, Winter and her mom went to the park to play her favorite game - volleyball! Winter was really good at volleyball for a 10-year old girl. She was the best setter and spiker in town. She did not want to play as long as she usually did. Something was bothering her. Can you guess? All she wanted was a piece of cake.

On their way home, Winter’s mom stopped by a store to pick up some ice cream to go with cake. The manager noticed Winter’s shoes and commented on how pretty they were. “I love pink and purple,” said the manager. “Me too,” said Winter. “I hope I get something pink and purple for my birthday.”

“When is your birthday,” asked the manager. “June 24th,” said Winter. “That is today. Well it is your lucky day,” said the manager. “We were going to do a drawing for these prizes, but you are our official winner. Congratulations on winning this pack of purple and pink slime and this checkers board game with pink and purple pieces,” said the manager. Winter was excited! She had never won anything before. “Thank you,” she said. She loved her prizes, but all she really wanted was a piece of cake.
