Dear Diary,

Today my mom and I made a new friend.....

Every Friday, Kate and her mom go to the park after her mom gets off work. Kate is sad this park doesn't have a playground but walking with her mom is just as fun. 

As Kate and her mom were walking, she spotted something over behind a tree. "Oh no mom, I think that's a dog" Kate exclaimed. Kate and her mom walked carefully up to the dog hoping not to scare it off. Sure enough, it was a dog. "What should we do?" Kate asked her mom. 

Kate and her mom approached the dog. They noticed that the dog didn't have a collar on, but it did seem nice. Kate's mom let the dog sniff her hand before reaching to pet it. "Why don't we take it to the shelter to see if somebody has reported a missing dog. I bet they will know what to do." said Kate's mom. 

Once arriving to the shelter, Kate and her mom went inside with their new friend. The people inside stated that nobody had reported a missing dog. They asked if Kate and her mom wouldn't mind keeping the dog until the owners came in looking for him. If the owners hadn't shown in ten days, they could adopt the dog if they wished.

Kate was thrilled. Ten days. If nobody had come looking for the dog in ten days, she could possibly have her first pet. Man, was she excited! Leaving the dog with her mom in the kitchen, Kate ran to her bedroom to find her diary. This is where she wrote all of her exciting things down.

Dear Diary,                Day 1

Today mom and I made a new friend.

It is a dog! Can you believe it? The shelter said I just have to wait ten days and then I can keep the dog if nobody claims him. I really hope I get to keep him. He would be my first real pet. I can tell my mom really likes him too. Crossing my fingers that we can be his forever home. I promised my mom I'd take care of him and everything!

Kate was glad she was on summer break. She could spend all day with her new friend. She decided to keep journaling about her new friend, which she named Josh.

Dear Diary,                    Day 2

Today my mom said I could give him a temporary name. I like the name Josh. I have so many plans for us. Today we played fetch. I found some tennis balls in the garage. He wasn't very good at fetch. We will keep trying. Only 8 more days left of waiting. I really hope I get to keep him.
