What is a fraction?

Hello and welcome to my kitchen!OR
My name is Chef Luigi.
I am a chef. I like to cook food and share it
with my friends. One of my favorite things to
bake is a cake. I usually make sure that all my
friends get an equal share of the cake. This
makes sharing and eating together fun!
I have to share this cake with three of my
friends. This means, I must divide the cake into
four equal parts. It can be easily said that
fraction is part of a whole. It is made up of two
parts, namely numerator and denominator.
Here's an example of a fraction:

According to the circle area representation, the
complete cake is a whole or 1.
When the whole is divided into two equal parts,
each part is called a half. Two halves make a
whole. If a whole is divided into four equal parts
each part is called a quarter or ¼.
On dividing the whole cake into four equal parts,
each one of us will get one fourth ( ¼) of the
cake. This means that one part out of the four
parts can be represented as ¼.

Sharing pizza in Chef Luigi's kitchen!

I sometimes bake pizzas on Sunday and invite my
friends over. After the delicious pizza is baked, I use
my pizza cutter to divide the pizza into equal parts and
share it with my friends.
If I have to share the pizza only with my friend
Ninja, then we divide it into two parts. This way each
of us gets one half of the pizza or ½. The denominator
of the fraction ½ is two and the numerator is one.

eight parts
four parts
When I have three friends over then we divide the
pizza into four equal parts. This way, each one of us
gets 1/4th of the pizza. Hence, for the fraction 1/4
the denominator is 4.
One day I invited seven of my friends for a treat.
I baked a yummy pizza with pepperoni topping. As we
all wanted to eat it, I divided the pizza into eight
equal parts. Each one of us got 1/8 th of the whole
pizza!
Do you think getting 1/8 of the pizza is better than
getting 3/8 th of the pizza? Why?

Fraction fun with fruits in Chef Luigi's kitchen!

When I work in my kitchen, I try to cook many
scrumptious dishes. Sometimes I cut different fruits to
toss up a healthy fruit salad. The recipe of my yummy
fruit salad requires me to cut various fruits into
different fractions.
I usually cut an orange into two halves as I need
to squeeze the juice of only half the orange.

The kiwi is sliced up into five pieces. I just need
1/5 of this kiwi. After this I add in a quarter of
the grapefruit.
Finally, I can add 1/8 of the total strawberries.
This means I will use only one out of the eight
strawberries available!
Now its time for some music...
