Welcome everyone!
Today we are going to learn about a really important event in American history:
The Boston Tea Party!

See if you can find all of Max's teacups for the party! There is one on each set of pages.
1

This is Emmy and Max. Emmy is a really smart cat. She knows all kinds of things.
Max isn't as smart as Emmy, but he is a nice dog and he likes listening to her talk.

2
Hey Emmy, guess what!
I want to have a tea party today. All of my friends are coming, and it will be so fun! You are invited!

Yay! Speaking of tea parties, I know what I want to tell you about today.

3
I want to tell you about
the Boston Tea Party!

Okay! But Boston is a pretty big place. That's a lot of people to invite to a party!
Boston is a place in the United States of America.

4

Don't worry Max! The Boston Tea Party wasn't a real tea party. It was a protest!
A protest is an event where a group of people get together to show they do not like something.

5
Here is a map of colonial Boston. Colonial means that Boston was still owned by another country. It is from a long time ago.

The protest took place in colonial Boston, Massachusetts in December 1773. 1773 was a long time ago!
7
During the protest, a big country called Britain was in charge of Boston and the people there.

Who helped at the protest, Emmy?
8

That's the cool part: we don't know!! Everybody that helped was in disguise.
A disguise is like a costume. At the protest, all of the men dressed up.

However, a lot of people thought that the Sons of Liberty had planned it. They were a group of guys who didn't like the rules that the people in Britain made for Boston.

9

Why were the people so mad that they had to protest? That's silly.

10

At the time, the city of Boston and a lot of other places in America were owned by a bigger country called Britain. They were angry because Britain was making the rules for them. They also made their favorite drink, tea, super expensive.
11

Wow! That is kind of annoying.

Think about it:
Would you like it if someone you didn't know that lived super far away told you what to do?
12
One day, three big ships came into Griffin's Wharf. They were carrying huge boxes of tea. The colonists didn't want the tea because it was from Britain and they were angry.
The people from Britain said that if they didn't take the tea, they would make them. That's scary!

Griffin's Wharf was the name of the water near Boston.
13
In the middle of the night, a bunch of men dressed up as Indians snuck onto the boats. They opened the boxes of tea and dumped them into the water.

Here is an old drawing of the Boston Tea Party.
15
They dumped 320 chests of tea in only three hours. The protesters ruined almost 92,000 pounds of tea!!!
