Algernon's StoryBy: Sarah Gheida

The small white mouse stared up at the
giant gloved hand descending towards him.
He was grabbed by his tail and shoved into
a small cardboard box box Dr. Strauss
looked on, tapping his toe impatiently. Dr.
Strauss hurriedly grabbed the box, shoved
five dollars in the pet store clerk's hand,
and rushed out the door.

The little white mouse shivered inside the
box. Not with cold, but fear. The box jostled
and the mouse was flung to the other side of
the box. Suddenly, light flooded the inside of
the box and the mouse was picked up and
strapped to an operating table. He was
suddenly picked with a needle and everything
went dark again.

"Well, hello Algernon." The little white mouse
blinked open his eyes to see two big men staring at
him. He jumped back and scurried around in
circles, looking for an escape. "He looks to be
okay." Said the man Algernon recognized as Dr.
Strauss. "He should be, he's been in and out of
consciousness for over a week now. I think he's
ready to meet Charlie." The other doctor said. "But
Dr. Nemur," Dr. Struass replied "he may not have
had time to reach full intelligence yet." "He's fine"
snapped Dr. Nemur as he grabbed Algernon.

"Hello Charlie." Dr. Nemur greeted as he
walked into the room. "We have someone for
you to meet." After a few minutes of Charlie
petting the mouse Algernon was shoved into a
box with winding walls filled with the scent of
cheese. Algernon quickly navigated the
pathways and soon found the cheese. Algernon
was then put back in his cage for the night to
reflect on his new found intelligence.

The next morning he had to navigate the
maze again. This went on for a few weeks and
everyday Charlie would come and pet him. The
first few weeks Charlie would tell Algernon how
he wasn't mad at Algernon for beating him but
soon Charlie would boast about winning. One
day, Charlie came to boast to Algernon but
Algernon was feeling particularly irritable. When
Charlie picked him up, Algernon bit him and
scurried back into his house. Things went down
hill from there.

Algernon woke up every morning to feel very
sick. Charlie would come to see Algernon with
a concerned look on his face and no longer
picked him up but just talked to him. Scientists
spoke in hushed voices as they poked and
prodded him, trying to find out what was
wrong.

Ugggg...
Algernon was starting to get very skinny. A
scientist put some cheese a few paces away
from where he was laying to see if he could get
to it. Algernon slowly rose up, like an old
mouse twice his age, and shuffled towards the
cheese. He tripped and bounced into the wall a
few times and finally gave up and collapsed on
the floor in a small heap. The scientist pushed
to cheese closer to him but by now Algernon
was to tired to even reach up and eat it.

Charlie now sat by Algernon's cage for a
good portion of the day, taking notes and
murmuring softly to himself. The scientists now
looked at him with fascination but also pity.
They knew the whatever was happening to
Algernon was likely to happen to him. Algernon
was getting to weak to even open his eyes for
more than a short while during the day. He
breathed slowly and didn't respond to any
medicine. Algernon knew he was dieing.
