As I reflect on my perception of literacies for the Information
age, I cant help but to reflect on my first years of teaching in 1986.
At that time, the only sources of information for teachers and
students were textbooks, magazines, newspapers, and television.
Many of the sources provided outdated information or information
that had changed. Although we were content with what we had to
work with, we saw the information age begin to change around us.
Prior to this module, my thought regarding information literacy
was the same as the Presidential Committee on Information Literacy,
"Information literacy is a survival skill in the Information Age". I felt
that it was important for me as the teacher to know how to find,
evaluate, and use information effectively. I knew that my
understanding would help me to integrate these literacies into the
curriculum.

My thoughts now regarding literacies for the Information
Age are far more inquisitive. After reading the material and
watching the videos, I feel more than ever that informational
literacy is the key to survival and success. As I watched the
video depict how students will read over 2300 web pages,
1281 facebook pages and 3.5 hours a day on-line, it showed
where students interest are. My thoughts now reflect on how
I will be able to integrate these into my teaching strategies. I
am already thinking of how I can prepare my lessons to
allow my students to take advantage of the different
information sources available to them. All of this falls in line
with why I am taking this course now. Returning as a
classroom teacher after being out of the classroom for the
past 5 years, I knew that the information age had changed
and advanced, and I plan to adapt these literacies in my
instructional strategies.

I am still in constant search of the most effective way of
integrating information literacies in my teaching strategies. I
am always looking for what worked well and what needs
improvement. From the reading, I know that information
literacy is the key. I am also constantly looking for my
strengths and how i can use these literacies to help me
progress as a teacher.

By this year being my first year back in the classroom, I am
trying to jump right in on integrating information literacies into
my teaching. I am designing lessons that are challenging my
students to use resources that they have never used before.
As I compare the information literacies now to those of the
1980s, it is as if a whole new world of information has opened
up. Being in this Certificate program has allowed me to get the
perspective of both a student and a teacher. My instructors
have integrated information literacies into our coursework, and
along with being extremely interesting, the learning has been
challenging and fun. The assignments have presented us with
the opportunity to use a variety of information to complete a
task. This has also given me an opportunity to incorporate
these literacies into my classroom. This program was a good
choice for me as I return to teaching, as it has opened my
eyes and helped me get up to speed on information literacy.
