The ABC's of the Honey Bee

A is for antenna. Honey bees have two antennas.
They use their antenna to smell and find their hive.Aa

B is for Brain. A honey bee's brain is
oval in shape and the size of a sesame seed. Brain

C is for Colony. A honey bee colony consists of 20,000-60,000
honeybees and one queen. Drones are male bees and all the other
female bees are worker bees.Colony

D is for dance. The "waggle dance" gives the direction and
distance of flowers and where to find food. The dance can also
signal any potential danger.

E is for eyes. Honey bees have 5 eyes. There are 3 small simple
eyes on top of the head and 2 large compound eyes are on
each side of the head.

F is for fly. Honey bees can fly for up to 6 miles
and at 15 miles an hour.

G is for egg. The Queen honey bee lays about 800-1,500
eggs a day. She can lay about 200,000 eggs in a year!

H is for honey. The bees make honey from the nectar they collect
from flowering trees and plants. The honey bee produces 1/12th
teaspoon of honey in their lifetime.

I is for insect. Honey bees are social insects because they live and
work together as a community. They are the only insects that produce
food for humans.

J is for jelly. "Royal" Jelly is made up of chewed pollen and a chemical
from the worker bee. The larvae that is chosen to become a Queen
bee will continue to eat only "Royal" jelly which will make her become
much larger than the rest of the bees.___10

Worker bees_

K is for worker bees. Worker bees usually live about 4-6 weeks. Worker bees have a
stinger. They do all the work outside and inside the hive. They make the honey, build
and clean the honeycomb, feed the larvae, and collect pollen and nectar._________11

L is for life cycle. The egg is the first stage of the honey bee's life cycle.
After the egg comes the the larva, then the pupa, and finally it
becomes an adult.

MmMillions of flowers

M is for millions of flowers. Honey bees visit about 2
million flowers to make one pound of honey.______13

Nest

N is for nest. A honey bee's nest is called a hive.
It is usually located in a hollow tree.____14

OoDrone bees_

O is for drone bees. Drone bees are the male bees. They do
not work or sting. Their only purpose is to mate with the
Queen bee.________15

PpPairs

P is for pairs. The honey bee has 2 pairs of wings and
2 stomachs, one for food and one for nectar.

QqQueen

Q is for Queen. The Queen honey bee can live up to 5
years. There can only bee one Queen per hive. She is the only
bee that lays eggs.

R is for red. Honey bees cannot see the color red. They can only
see certain colors such as blue, yellow, purple, and ultraviolet.Red

S is for sting. The honey bee will sting if they feel threatened. Only the
queen and worker bees can sting. The worker honey bee will die
shortly after they sting. The Queen bee can sting many times.
