
Hi, name is Joanna. Today, my mom Maria is taking me to my first day at preschool, but I feel scared. I tell my mom that I don't want to go, that I want to stay at home. My mom Maria smiles at me and says that I have to go to school. "But mom I'm scared to go to school." My mom asks, "Why are you scared?" I look at her and say, "What if no one likes me?" She looks at me and says, "You will make a lot of friends, everything is going to be okay."




I started feeling anxious because my mom still wanted to take me to school. My mom looked at me and asked, "What's wrong, sweetheart?" "What if the teacher and all the children are mean to me?" "Honey, everything is going to be fine, Ms. Rodriguez is a really nice teacher and I bet that all the children are going to be nice to you" my mom said. But still that didn't make me feel better.
My mom asked, "Tell me what it's really bothering you?" I sigh and said, "Will you return to pick me up from school?" My mom said, "Sweetheart, of course I will go pick you up, I just have to go to work for a couple hours and then I will go straight to get you, I will not leave you at school" and than she gave me a big hug. I was feeling a bit better.









My mom said, "you know what, you can take your bear on the ride to school, it will make you feel better." I guess my mom was right because my favorite bear made me feel more calm on our way to school. My mom continued to make feel better by telling me all the fun I was going to have in the classroom and how I was going to make new friends.

It's okay for children to feel different emotions when they explore and experience a new environment like preschool. Parents need to provide them comfort and give them the encouragement that everything will be fine. Many children experience certain emotions because they think parents will leave them but we need to let children understand that we will be their to pick them up and to have fun exploring their new environment. It's essential for children to feel secure and loved. It's important to let children express their feelings and find ways to feel better like read a book or just sit in a quiet area until they feel better.
