Once upon a time a young girl, called Sophie, lived in a small town somewhere in Australia. Her parents owned a traditional ranch with cattle, sheep, pigs, and horses.
Since her childhood, she was always surrounded by animals and until her 6th birthday, she already knew how to milk cows, mow a lawn, shear sheep and her dad even taught her to drive one of their tractors.
Because they lived thousands of miles away from the nearest town, Sophie was home schooled by her mum and once a week she had radio lessons. This meant that she had no opportunity to meet her mates in person, and she sometimes felt lonely, even though she was never alone, because she spent most of the day helping her parents with animals.

Since little girl, she always wished she had someone as a companion, but her parents couldn’t have another child. Sophie liked spending time with the animals, especially horses, yet she was a bit scared of them, because they were heavy, and she had a fear of being stepped on.

One day when she was walking across the field, Sophie got an idea. She was convicted that only one animal would be able to fulfil emptiness in her heart. She thought it would be a great company and someone she could have played with. Sophie was thinking of… a dog!
There was only one problem. When her father was little, he was bitten by a wild dog and ever since he had a huge fear of dogs, no matter how big or dangerous they were.

When Sophie told her parents about her wish, she got a negative response. Her mother had nothing against dogs, but in her opinion, there was already enough work, and an extra animal would just mean another burden. She thought there would still be enough chance for making friends when Sophie grew up and left for college.
Nevertheless, she kept the wish in her heart, and she decided to get a dog when she would start a college in Sydney. Because of her social isolation throughout her childhood, she had some fears about getting to know her new colleagues. Sophie thought it would be easier for her to overcome the first acquaintance difficulties if she had someone familiar, loyal, and trustworthy.
