Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in Tuckahoe, New York. He was separated from his mom at a very young age. After their separation, he only saw her a couple of times, and when she did she had to sacrifice a lot. When Frederick was young his mom would come to where he was staying and take care of him but if she didn't get back by dawn she would get punished so she put everything on the line to be with her baby boy.

Harriet Bailey (Frederick's Mom) died when he was about 7. Frederick didn't get to see her before she died let alone get to know her. Since Frederick and his mom were separated at such a young age he was placed under the control of an elderly woman. Douglass experienced a very rough childhood, he barely knew his parents and he was working in the fields before he was even 10. The working conditions in the field were terrible they got ratty clothes and bad food.

Frederick went to many different fields to work as a slave and he had a very rough life growing up. The slaves were not even given beds they were just given a blanket and most slaves didn't even get a blanket. They also were given a very scarce amount of clothes. Per person, the clothes cost around $7. They got minimal sleep and as soon as it was dawn they were in the fields. These slaves were pushed humanly limits and it was really bad for their health, it makes it even worse for their health when you put into consideration what they are given to eat.

When Frederick was young he was moved away from his original plantation and was moved to another slave owner. He was staying with his slaveowner and there was a mistress there and she was a very nice, kind-hearted woman. The mistress illegally taught Frederick the ABCs and a little of how to read.

"Say it with me Frederick, A B C..." Said, Ms. Auld
"A B C" Frederick repeated.
"You are learning quickly."
"Thanks, Ms. Auld"
"What do you think your doing," Said Mr. Auld that had just walked in.
"Uh.. well I was just teaching Frederick the ABCs and how to read."
"You know that is Illegal and once he learns how to read he won't be a slave anymore."
"Sorry, I was just trying to be nice," Said Ms. Auld Somberly.
