This book is dedicated to Mrs. Kiles 1st grade students.

The book is called "My Healthy Plate." We will use this book to learn how to have a healthy plate at breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Objective: Students will be able to identify what dairy, fruit, vegetable, protein, and grains are.
Any food made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley, or another cereal grain is a grain product.
Examples: Bread, pasta, breakfast cereals, grits, and tortillas are examples of grain products. Foods such as popcorn, rice, and oatmeal are also included in the Grains Group.
What is a Grain?

What is a Protein?
All foods made from seafood; meat, poultry, and eggs; beans, peas, and lentils; and nuts, seeds, and soy products are part of the Protein Foods Group
Examples: eggs, any type of meat (ham, chicken, steak, beef, turkey, bacon, etc), nuts, yogurt, cheese

What is Vegetables?
Any vegetable or 100% vegetable juice counts as part of the Vegetable Group. Vegetables may be raw or cooked; fresh, frozen, canned, or dried/dehydrated; and may be whole, cut
up, or mashed.
Examples: lettuce, broccoli, green beans, corn, spinach, cauliflower, peas, bell peppers, celery, radish, cucumbers, etc






Share with your elbow partner. Do you like vegetables? What is your favorite vegetables?
What are Fruits?
Fruits are sweet and juicy. They come from a plant or a tree and can be eaten as food.
Examples: Apples, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, oranges, grapes, grapefruit, kiwi, bananas, etc.

What is Dairy?
The Dairy Group includes milk, yogurt, cheese, lactose-free milk, fortified soy milk, and yogurt.
Examples: Any types of milk, yogurt, icecream, etc
