Amy Finds a Worry
By: Samantha Feldman

One sunny morning, Amy wakes up very happy and cheerful. It is her first day at her new school and she is excited to meet new people. When her alarm goes off, Amy gets dressed, brushes her hair, and begins eating breakfast.

Out of nowhere, Amy’s joy turns into worry. Amy becomes worried about everything. She is worried that her outfit doesn’t match, she is worried that her hair is a mess, and she is worried that no one is going to want to be her friend at this new school.
When Amy’s mom says it’s time to go to school, she notices a change in Amy’s mood. When she asks Amy what is wrong, Amy chooses to lie. She says she is just very excited for school. She puts on a fake smile, but on the inside she has no control. She begins to feel nervous and her heart starts beating out of her chest.

What's wrong, Amy?
Nothing, I am just
excited for school!
When she arrives at school, Amy carries this worry with her. She carries it to her classroom, to the playground, and to lunch. This worry is starting to weigh her down. Amy’s teacher begins to notice that Amy is upset. She sees that Amy is worried and thinks it is stopping her from wanting to meet new friends.

When Amy’s mom picks her up from school, the teacher tells her about Amy’s day. Amy’s mom tries talking to Amy on the way home, but she stays quiet.

That night, Amy finds herself tossing and turning and unable to sleep. She rolls out of bed and wakes up her mom. Amy starts to think that the only way to make her worry disappear is to talk about it with her mom.
When Amy tells her mom how scary the first day of school was for her, her mom says that everyone feels worried and scared sometimes. It is completely normal, especially because Amy did not know anyone at first. She tells Amy that tomorrow will be a better day.

The next day, Amy walks into the classroom. She becomes scared when she sees all the kids playing and begins breathing heavily. Her heart rate increases, and her teacher begins to worry.
