Somewhere in a little town, within a little house there lives a woman.

The woman is named Alice. She lives as a successful Art Therapist.

Alice wasn't always so successful though. She
had a long journey to reach where she is
today. It started when Alice was a child. She
was very shy and didn't often leave her
mother's side. She didn't like going to many
places and didn't like large crowds or lines.
Alice always had to have one of her stuffed
animals with her to make her feel safe and
happy.

When Alice was a baby and throughout
elementary school she got sick a lot. She
missed a lot of days and the other kids made
fun of her. Alice didn't talk to many people or
go on play dates with her classmates. She
started to hate school and get mad at
everyone but, she always went to school and
kept good grades.

When Alice started middle school things got a bit
better. She met two girls who would be her lifelong
best friends. Despite these friends Alice still had a
hard time in school. She still felt left out of class
parties and plans her class had for the weekends.
She still didn't talk much and still didn't like school.
Alice knew the nervous feelings she was having at
school and the loneliness she felt even when her
friends were with her was not normal and not right.
She finally told her parents she was having problems
at school. They understood her issues but did not
know how to help her. They asked Alice's grandfather
for the phone number of a counselor. The counselor
could talk to Alice and help her with her feelings.

Over the next year Alice learned a lot about
her feelings and why she did certain things.
Alice and her family still didn't know why she
was having these feelings though. When Alice
was almost done with seventh grade she
stopped going to school. She would curl up
tight into a ball and refuse to move when her
parents came to wake her up for school. Alice
finished up the school year at home.
Alice's counselor and doctor were able to
guess from this experience that Alice had an
anxiety disorder. All the nervous feelings were
extra anxiety that her body produced. The
anxiety that was meant to help the body was
now keeping the body from doing things.

Alice was so happy to know what was going on but,
also nervous about what was going to happen now.
Her doctor gave her some medicine to help with the
anxiety so she could go back to school and feel okay
about hanging out with her friends. It was still hard.
Every time she thought about going to public places
she felt a knot form in her stomach and she didn't
want to go anymore.
For a few months Alice was okay but, then her school
started changing teachers and got more students.
The stress added more anxiety to Alice and she
stopped going to school again. She went back before
the year ended but it was hard and took a lot of
effort. She finished middle school and was happy to
move on to high school.

Alice had to change schools when she went
to high school and met a lot of new people.
She made a few friends and was quite
happy there. She was stressed and still
very anxious during the day.
She had panic attacks some days. Her
stomach would twist in knots and her
breathing would get short. The walls
seemed like they were closing in and she
would have to ask the teacher if she could
go to the bathroom to calm down.

As the years in high school went on Alice
was able to handle her anxiety better. She
didn't have as many panic attacks and
didn't feel nervous all the time. She made
great friends who were always there to
help her when she was nervous about
things. Alice's teachers were understanding
about her anxiety and let her sit by the
door in case she needed to leave for a
moment. Alice made fantastic grades and
was in the top ten in her class.
