Diversity & Art
How do the figures portrayed in the paintings feel?
How do we feel while observing the paintings?
They feel sad because other people don't accept or respect them. They also feel lonely because they can't communicate with others. But they are also proud of themselves because they overcome the problems of life.

You see me - Ashley Hannan
...that disability does not mean INABILITY.

We feel
....friendship, support, peace
- these girls are together no matter what.
...sadness, depression, alienation, understanding, trust, love, respect, discrimination.
....confidence, power to fight, not giving up.

The figures in the portrait feel scared, desperate, sad, lonely, isolated and hopeless. They want to see around and want to be a part of the community.
The blind leading blinds- Pieter Bruegel the Elder

We feel sad because these blind people cannot see where they are going so they are bound to fall. We feel angry, too, because they are left alone with nobody to help them.We are also curious about their fate since the blind man leading the line is on the ground.

I am proud of myself, I think that there are other people like me. I am not beautiful, but I am satisfied with my life. Sometimes I am scared of what other people think about me.
Portrait of Antonietta Gonzalez - Lavinia Fontana

They can feel sad, bad, lonely, pushed aside, unhappy, embarrassed, weird, painful, humiliated, shy.
..they can feel well, happy, satisfied being among people with the same problems .
On the other hand...
The cripples – L.S Lowry

We feel sadness and compassion towards them because of their problems. If they are out of the town we want them to be inside with all the others.
We admire them for not giving up. We feel happy because they are all together in a square.
On the other hand...

I feel thoughtful and serious because of my condition.
I feel melancholic, because I am thinking of the days I could walk, but I'm happy, because I can draw. I feel gratitude for my doctor.
Self-Portrait with the Portrait of Doctor Farill - Frida Kahlo

We are touched and admire her because she fights for her life and her dream which is painting.

lonely,
hungry, worried, desperate
He feels...
The blind man's meal - Pablo Picasso

We feel........

Unsure,
Sad,
Uncomfortable
Bad
Lonely

I feel sad because we suffer.
At least we are all together.
We are hungry and we feel shame because we are here.
The Beggars -
Pieter Brugel the Elder

The figures in this painting are two rich women, friends who feel proud of themselves for being different.

Allegorical Painting of Two Ladies wearing Beauty Patches -unknown artist

We feel happy and weird at the same time when we look at the painting. We see beauty of different races and we think polarized people.

They feel sad and angry. Their hands are together to feel better.
Two sides - Nancy Rourke

We feel sad that mute children are excluded. We feel respect, love and admiration for all the people with special abilities who love themselves and fight for their rights.

The refugee in the painting feels sad, lonely and angry for all the troubles and unhappiness brought to him, his family and his country by the war. He also feels scared and insecure about what will follow and how he will be accepted in a new, strange place. Looking through the open gate though he feels determined to keep fighting and hoping for the best.
The Refugee - Felix Nussbaum

sad, in fear, loser, hopeless, lost, isolated in a dark life
