
Abraham Lincoln was born 1809 in a log cabin in Hodgensville, Kentucky. He later became our 16th President.

B: Bluegrass
Bluegrass, which is Kentucky's nickname, comes from the grass found in the North Central part of Kentucky. It is known as perennial, cool-season lawn grass. This means it comes back year after year and grows most vigorously during the cool seasons of fall and spring.

C: Cardinal
The cardinal is the state bird of Kentucky. It became the state bird in 1926. They are named after the Catholic Bishops. Fun fact: Male cardinals get their red feathers from food.

D: Daniel Boone
Daniel Boone was a frontier man who loved to explore and lead settlers to Kentucky. He was captured by the Shawnee and was adopted by the chief and was named Big Turtle.

E: Earthquakes
Earthquakes have happened in Kentucky since 1811 along the Madrid Fault. It is an area that includes parts of four states. The most powerful has happened here in KY.

F: Frankfort
Frankfort is the state capital of Kentucky. It is located on the banks of the KY river. The current capital was started in 1904 and was completed in 1910.

G: Goldenrod
The Goldenrod is the Kentucky state flower. It became the state flower in 1926. It is often found along the roadsides in the late summer or early fall.

H: Horses
Horses are used for races such as the Kentucky Derby which first took place in 1875. This has been a tradition since the late 18th century. The thoroughbred is the Kentucky state horse.

I: Isaac Shelby
Isaac Shelby was the first and fifth governor of Kentucky. He was in the office from 1792 to 1796 and from 1812 to 1816. He was a colonel in the Continental Army.

J: Jefferson Davis
Jefferson Davis was born in Fair View, Kentucky. He was president of the Confederacy during the Civil War. There is a monument located in Pembroke, KY named after him.

K: Kentucky Derby
Kentucky Derby happens on the 1st Saturday in May, it takes place at Churchill Downs and this race is the biggest sporting event in Kentucky. Churchill Downs was built in 1875.

L: Louisville
Louisville is the home of Churchill Downs, the Bell of Louisville, and the Lousiville Slugger Museum. It is also the largest city in the state in Kentucky.

M: Mammoth Cave
Mammoth Cave is Kentucky's most famous natural site and is the largest cave system in the world.

N: National Corvette Museum
National Corvette Museum along with the Corvette plant is located in Bowling Green, KY. The corvette is America's favorite sports car for the past 50 years.

O:Ohio River
Ohio Rivers divides Kentucky free from three states in the north from slavery.

P:Pleasant Hill
Pleasant Hill is a community of people known as shakers and they arrived in Kentucky in 1810-1910.
