It was a bright and sunny day at Spring Valley Elementary School. It was Field Day! Sarah, Jake, and the rest of the class were excited to compete for the Field Day prize.
There were four classes competing for the third grade Field Day prize. But what exactly was the prize? Principal Smith grabbed his bullhorn and yelled, “Okay children, who’s ready for me to reveal the prize?”
The children cheered and chanted with excitement. “We are, we are!”
“The winner of today’s ceremony will receive a pizza party!” Principal Smith announced.
“It is simple. Whichever class wins at least half of the obstacles receives the party,” said Principal Smith.

“But how will we know who the winner is?” Emily asked.
“I know what that means! We must win 5 out of the 10 obstacles,” Sarah said.

“Great job Sarah! How did you know that was half?” said Mrs. Walker, her fourth grade teacher.

“In my head, I thought of the fraction one half. I thought of the doubles that make up ten, because five is half of ten! That's what made me think of 5/10!” said Sarah.
“Very good, Sarah. You seem like you have learned a lot from our fractions unit,” Mrs. Walker said with glee.
5 + 5 = 10
1/2 = 5/10
"LET THE GAMES BEGIN!"
“On your mark, get set, go!” Principal Smith shouted.
Mrs. Walker’s class was motivated to win at least half of all obstacles. The boys and girls in Mrs. Walker’s class competed to the best of their ability up until the final obstacle.

“Listen up, everyone! This is our final obstacle of the day. The obstacle is tug- of- war. The two classes competing are Mrs. Walker’s class and Mr. Jones’ class. If Mrs. Walker’s class wins, they win the entire field day, since they have already won four obstacles! Everyone ready?” Principal Smith said.
