Introduction
This book is written by 5th graders: Lily Stanford, Madilyn Knoll, Edna Skrgic, Savannah Higgins, Bennett Bauer, and Lucy from the Expanded Learning (ELP) class of 2021-22. Teacher: Stacey Snyder
Have you ever thought about what your school looked like long ago? Well, there's always that one special school. That one special school for us is Orange Elementary, Waterloo, Iowa. We wanted to write about Orange history because we have not discovered any such document. It took several weeks but we were able to find enough information to write this book.
The original Orange High School was finished in 1915 and the first class to graduate was 1918. Orange High School closed in 1972. On December 22, 2011, a new Orange Elementary School was in progress of being built at 5805 Kimball Avenue and opened in 2013.
Orange Township
The name Orange came from Orange Township, which was a neighborhood originally with a church and school. They worked together to build
the Orange School, a high school
that was open from 1913-1972.
Then, they agreed to build an
only elementary school, Orange
Elementary School, that opened
in 1973 and closed in the summer
of 2011. The current Orange Elementary School
opened in 2013.

Mascot and School Colors
The mascot was and is a tiger. Orange School from 1913-1972 named the tiger Tuffy, now we have one named Roary.
Tuffy was a stuffed tiger
that is still standing today
at the Waterloo Southern
Church of the Brethren
where a history museum exists.
The school colors once were orange,
black and purple, but now orange
and black. Roary is a costume that a
5th grade student wears at assemblies and special occasions.

School Sports
During the years of the high school, sport were an option for boys and girls, but they both only got to participate in two sports. Girls go to do tennis and volleyball at the
old Orange. Boys got to do basketball
and baseball, and the baseball team
was called Orange Farmers Baseball.
Now boys and girls in 5th grade get a
wide variety of sports, such as football, wrestling, soccer, volleyball, basketball, track, and swimming in extracurricular activities called Extramurals.

Transportation
In the time of the Orange High School (Orange School,1913-1972) and when it opened in 1913, carriages pulled by horses called hacks were used to get to the school. By the 1930s school buses were used for transportation instead. When the first Orange Elementary School opened in 1973, school buses were also used.

School Song
At the current Orange, there is no school song. But, in the time of the high school, some songs such as "Lest we Forget" by Ida B. Snavely, (a citizen of Orange Township) and the "Class Song of Orange" were sang.
School songs were very
important to the culture
of the school and the
neighborhood as witnessed
in this photo.

On a hill in Orange,
Stands the school we love best,
Every hour was dear
Through the four long years.
Graduation brings diplomas
And diplomas bring college.
We hope we’ve left an inspiration
To those we left behind.
The time draws nigh when we must part,
Nevertheless we’ve just got a start,
May we leave with thoughts that are big and strong,
For We’ve worked hard in the days that are gone.
Roaming in the big wide world, To trails of great success.
Hand in hand we go,
To a higher goal.
Just a word to all the rest,
We bid you all success.
Schoolmates of dear Orange High,
We bid you Good-Bye”
