Computer networking-The sharing of data or services between computers using wireless or cable transmission media

Packet-a single unit of binary data routed through a network 

 Local Area Network (LAN)-Connects a group of computers in close proximity, such as in an office building, school, or home

Wide Area Network (WAN)-A network that connects devices in geographically separated areas.

A node-Anything that is connected to the network. While a node is typically a computer, it can also be something like a printer or CD-ROM tower.

Media Access Control (MAC)-The process by which devices determine which device may access the network at any given time.

IP addresses-A number that uniquely identifies each computer or device connected to the Internet.

bus topology-A network layout in which there is one main trunk, or backbone, that all the various computers and network devices are connected to.

Ring Topology-Is a Topology where the computers are connected on a loop or ring. Data flows in one direction only.

Network Token- special series of bits that travels around a token-ring network. As the token circulates, computers attached to the network can capture it. The token acts like a ticket, enabling its owner to send a message across the network.

Star topology-A topology with one central node that has each computer or network device attached to the central node. All data first goes into the central node and then is sent out to its destination. (Think of it like a bicycle wheel with spokes.)

Tree topology-A network that combines the characteristics of bus and star topologies. Groups of star topologies are connected to a central cable.

Protocol-A set of rules governing the exchange or transmission of data between devices.

peer-to-peer architecture-a type of network in which each workstation has equivalent capabilities and responsibilities

Client-server Architecture-A network design in which client computers use a centrally administered server to share data, data storage space, and devices.
