Hello Students!!
Today you will learn about the regions of Mississippi and some of the resources that are provided. In this lesson you will learn about the Ten Regions of Mississippi. Yazoo Delta, The Prairie Regions, The Gulf Coast, Loess Hills, North Central Hills, Flatwoods, Pontotoc Ridge, Woodall Mountains, and The Piney Woods.
The Yazoo Delta region is the lowland between the Mississippi, Yazoo, Tallahatchie, and Coldwater rivers. The Delta has some of the most fertile land in the United States. The Fertile soil is good for growing crops.
Mississippi has two prairie regions.
The Black Belt region is a crescent-shaped strip of prairie land in the northeastern part of our state. The name "Black Belt" comes from the black color of the fertile soil.
The other Prairie, Jackson Prairie, is a narrow belt of land that stretches east across the state from Jackson. This region has plenty of trees and the soil isn't as good as the Black Belt region.
The Gulf Coast region is flat and extends 15 to 20 miles inland. Its soil is sandy and not good for farming. Fishing is very popular on the Gulf Coast. The Gulf Coast has three of the state's largest cities-Gulfport, Biloxi, and Pascagoula.
Hills and Trees
Loess Hills form a narrow band that stretches north to south through our state. The loess was blown from the fertile Delta. This region is good for farming and raising cows.
North Central Hills is located east of the Loess Hills.
Flatwoods is a strip of land on the eastern border of the North Central hills. This region has many trees that can be used for lumber.
The Pontotoc Ridge is a strip of steep-sided hills that is sandwiched between the Flatwoods and the Black Belt region.
Woodall Mountains are apart of the Appalachian Mountain. Woodall mountain rises 806 feet above sea level.
In the southern pat of the state is the Piney Woods. The Piney Wood region is important to the state's lumber business. Cities in this region are Hattiesburg, Laurel, and McComb.
