The Amazon Rainforest is the largest rainforest in the world! It is the largest rainforest in the world and is home to more than 30 million people and one and ten of all known species on Earth!

Where is the Amazon Rainforest?
Like many rainforests, the Amazon Rainforest is located near the equator and it covers a large portion of the continent of South America. (It covers 9 countries!)
The Amazon Rainforest is also known as The Amazon Jungle. It has the Amazon Basin acting as the source of the Amazon River.
The Basin is the area that drains into the Amazon River, meaning that the water from the Basin eventually enters the Amazon River.

The reason The Amazon Rainforest is sometimes called the "Tropical Rainforest" is that it is located between the Tropic of Cancer in the North and the Tropic of Capricorn to the South, with the Equator, passing through them?
The area between the two imaginary lines is known as the Tropics and thus the name, Tropical Rainforest!

Did
you know...?
The tropical rainforest is hot and humid year-round. There is no change of seasons such as Summer, Winter, Autumn, and Spring.
The average temperature is around 77˚ all year. The jungle also gets 12 hours of sunlight all year! The rainfall in the Amazon Rainforest ranges from as low as 2,000 mm to as high as 10,920 mm annually.

The warm and muggy climate has a big impact on the presence of both plants and animals.
Did you know...?
The Amazon Rainforest has the largest number of species for the kingdoms Animalia and Plantae, including many endangered species?

The Amazon is home to the biggest ecosystem in the world! It is all driven by the Amazon River, which covers thousands of miles. The River basin, which has large rainfall levels and heavy humidity, has a direct impact on the ecosystem as well.

The ecosystem of the Rainforest is so big that it helps to control the entire planet's atmospheric carbon levels.
It also helps to maintain the water cycle through transpiration. By contributing high moisture levels to the atmosphere, the amount of droughts is reduced!

The Amazon Rainforest has a total of 4 layers to it. Emergents, canopy, Understory, and Forest Floor.
The forest floor: dark, moist
Understory: layer between the ground and the treetops
Canopy: leafy roof, very thick, blocks sunlight and rain
Emergent layer: home to really tall trees
