Introduction
The Desert is found in every continent in the world. Furthermore about about a fifth of the worlds land mass is the desert. As a result, one billion people call this unique biome home. Even with all these people, there are unique plants and animals that only can only be found in the desert. This biome is an important environment that we must keep for the sake of humans, the ecosystem, and the biodiversity of the world.
Deserts In the Cold?
Although most people think that deserts are only found in warm dry areas with sand, however, that is a misconception. A desert explained is basically a place that receives less than 25cm of rain per year. This means that places like Antarctica is also a desert. In the winter, the average temperature in Antarctica is −57 °C. On the other hand, in places like the Sahara Desert, located in parts of Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Sudan and Tunisia, the temperature can soar up to 47°C in the day time. Deserts has many forms, in the most southern part of the earth as well as places right on the equator.

Animals
In the desert, it looks pretty lifeless and empty. However, if we look a little closer, there are many animals. Each with different adaptations to survive. We will look at two animals that specifically adapted to the desert biome. The Camel and the Fennec Fox. When we see a camel, our eyes usually go to its big humps. At first glance, it looks as though it's useless. Even so, it is vital for the camels’ survival. When there is no food or water, the humps help the Camel as the humps store fat which gets broken down in times of struggle allowing Camels to travel up to two weeks without any food or water. The Fennec Fox is an unbelievably cute animal and is the smallest fox in the world. However, one iconic characteristic of the Fennec Fox is its big ears. It can measure up to six inches. These majestic ears radiate body heat and help keep the foxes cool. As if that was not enough, even their coat has a twist for survival. The foxes, thick coats insulates them during cold nights and protects them from hot sun during the day. Animals in the desert need to adapt in order to survive in this unforgiving environment.
