It was Jerry's first day in 3rd grade. As he walked into the classroom he saw his best friend, Tom, and went to sit next to him. They were going to have a fun year.

It was lunch time, and Jerry was ready to eat. Today his mom had given him a chocolate bar. Jerry loved chocolate. He sat down next to Tom and took out his chocolate bar.

Tom looked at Jerry's chocolate bar and asked for a piece. "Can I have some?" Jerry didn't want to share his chocolate bar because he loved chocolate. Tom was very sad and left. On his way out, Jerry saw Tom make a mean face to Tyke, one of their classmates that Tom did not like.

That night when Jerry went home, he told his mom he made his best friend sad. His mom said, "Ren from Confucianism is what you have when you love someone ("The Confucian"). You love Tom right?" Jerry said, "Yes." "Well, Ren also says when you love someone you must give up things for them" (Lee). Jerry decided he would try it.

Ren

The next day at lunch, Jerry went to Tom again and gave him a piece of his chocolate. "Mmmm!" Tom was really happy and ate the chocolate. It made Jerry very happy and he gave him more. As they were walking out of the lunch room, Jerry heard a teacher say, "Ahh yes, this is Ren, Jerry was nice and shared because he wanted to" (Stefon).

Jerry and Tom walked to science class together. Jerry really liked science class. As they were lining up, they saw Tyke behind them. Tom made some faces at Tyke again but Tyke didn't see. Then they went into the classroom.

In science class, they were learning about plants. "Plants give us air that helps us live," Ms. Kim, their science teacher, said. "Native Americans are thankful to plants and Mother Earth because they give us life" (Forbes). "They think that everything has a life and we should be nice to them" (Sotillos).

RING! RING! RING! The bell rang and school was over. "Want to go to the snack store?" Tom asked Jerry. "Okay, lets go." Jerry and Tom went to the snack store together to find something to eat.

When they were walking into the snack store, they saw Tyke again. This time Tom didn't make a face. He said, "Hey, Tyke, you look ugly!" Tyke ran out the store crying. Jerry didn't say anything, but he wanted Tom to stop.
