Chuy is a 17 year old who gets stabbed in the bathroom at a school event by a man wearing yellow shoes. Chuy does not understand why he was stabbed by the man, but it resulted in his slow death and transition into a ghost.
Now that Chuy is a ghost, he is not in the same bodily state he was in when he was living. Some of the strategies Chuy discovered is kicking his legs when he wanted to move from area to area, knowing when the wind would support him when flying, and tightening his stomach muscles when he wants to stay in one place. He has also learned that he can penetrate his hand into people when he encountered an irritable police officer.
As Chuy spends more and more time as a ghost, he feels more comfortable exploring his new world. He goes and visits places such as his old home with his family, his grandfathers grave, and many tows and areas in Fresno. As his life as a ghost continues, he notices that suddenly, he begins to disappear. Chuy's mom also makes the decision that she wants Chuy's best friend, Eddie, to murder Chuy's killer.
During Chuys meet with his grandfathers grave, he tells his grandfather a secret about what he'd done when he was younger in hopes to apologize and come clean for something he'd done when he was younger. Next, Chuy is at a gas station and encounters a bigger man on the curb drinking a cherry slush, also wearing yellow shoes..., he then observed that the man is a hostile, mean man that loves the word stupid. Chuy is intrigued by this man because he reminds him of the same yellow shoes his murderer was wearing when he was killed.
