Author's Note
Charlotte O'Loughlin was inspired to write The Night of the Dragon with her love of reading the series Wings of Fire.
She started reading the series when her class started talking about graphic novels. She went to her school library to ask about it. Sure enough, they had the chapter books and graphic novels. She started with the graphic novels in 3rd grade. When she was done she started the chapter books. She loves the books so much that she made this book at her writing camp.

illustrators Note
Charlotte O'Loughlin was inspired by her love of drawing. During her free time, she would look at book covers. She would draw and color a poster of it. She would hang it up on her wall and hope it looked like the actual book cover. Each one she did started to look more and more like the actual book cover. Each day, hour, and minute she drew, each time she got better. Now she can draw anything she like and has confidence that it would look good.

prologue
I lived in a rainforest with my mom and sister Lava. We didn't have to live in the dreadful volcano like the other dragons. Then one day I went out to the river and found a strange rock. It was a blue-green color and it glowed. I brought it home to show my mom. She freaked out when she saw it. But I just grew more curious. A few years later I looked at it closely. Then something happened. I could read minds...

Chapter 1
Magma was a dragon unlike any other. She could read minds. Magma was a black dragon with red and silver specks. Her eyes are blue and she is seven years old.

Chapter 2
Lava is so confused. "How come Magma gets to read minds. It's so unfair," I asked Mom about it but she said, "You'll understand when you're older." Well, I am older and she still hasn't said anything.

Chapter 3
Magma can only read minds if she is focused and calm. She can tell Lava is jealous from what she has seen in her mind. "I didn't mean to find the rock, but when Mom freaked out I grew more curious."

Chapter 4
Lava is super goofy. She loves making jokes and all that funny stuff. She loves watching people smile and laugh when she tells jokes. She loves all dragons. But Lava doesn't know whats ahead of her.

Chapter 5
Magma can also see visions and prophecies too.
When she woke up this morning, she had a prophecy:
Beware all the colors of night, beware the flier in stars, beware of all the moons, the volcano will erupt.

Chapter 6
Lava knows that Magma can see visions and all that boring stuff. But what she told us today was ridiculous. "Beware all the blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I just don't get it. Why didn't I find the rock? Gramma and Grampa said it was destiny. Why am I not destined to do anything?"

Chapter 7
Magma is freaked out about the prophecy. "What does it mean? And which volcano?" Then an idea came to her. "What if it's Dad's volcano with all the other dragons. That can't be possible," She thought. "There are so many other volcanos! So it doesn't make sense for it to be that exact volcano."

Chapter 8
Lava isn't sure if the prophecy is actually real. I" am not even sure if I believe in them," she thought. Could it be real though? I can't be sure yet. I need clues.

Chapter 9
Magma wasn't sure what to do. But that day a note came from their dad. It read, "Hello, I have troubling news. The volcano is erupting. I need help evacuating everybody. Please help."

Chapter 10
Lava read the note. She was freaked out. Was the prophecy actually real? She didn't even know what to think. Did she even believe in the prophecy. I hope Magma knows what to do.

Chapter 11
Magma did not know what to do. Should she just back down, or should she go to the volcano to help the dragons? Whatever she chose, she better think fast. "I know!" She thought, "I can go to the volcano and evacuate all the dragons to a safe spot in the rainforest. But I need Lava's help!"

Chapter 12
Magma asked Lava if she wanted to help. She said yes! She wasn't sure at first, but she knew she had to. What would happen if she didn't? "I hope they're all alright," she thought.

Chapter 13
Magma was flying over the rainforest towards the erupting volcano with Lava. "I hope this works." She said. When they got to the volcano, they met their dad at the base. They talked with him about the situation. "We need to evacuate everyone to a safe spot," Magma said.

Chapter 14
Lava was helping Magma with evacuating everyone out of the boiling hot and erupting volcano, and leading them to the safe spot in the rainforest. There, after everyone was safe, they would build a village near Lava's home.
