This is dedicated to my son.

Lamar has been fascinated by words for as long as he can remember. He enjoys the sounds that words make, the shapes of words, and the arrangement of letters in words. His favorite words include cellphone, mammals, and violet. Lamar spends his free time at school writing down words and scribble on the letters to make fun drawings. He sometimes brings his drawings home to his parents, and other times his teacher pins them to the classroom noticeboard.

Mr. Williams, Lamar's art teacher, walked into his classroom one day and noticed one of Lamar's recent works of word art. He was impressed by his creativity and word choice. After all, few fourth graders know what the word shelter means, much less how to spell it.

Lamar's word art transformed the word shelter into a lovely image featuring ducks, chicken, and butterflies in a natural, undisturbed setting complete with trees and a pond.
Lamar's instructor, Mrs. Wedderburn, was not approached about Lamar's talent until after the class had broken for recess. He is not just a highly talented speller, but also a very talented artist, according to Mrs. Wedderburn.
He transforms the letters of words into characters and images to create his artistic pieces, therefore I'm confident he remembers the spellings. He'd perform well in a spelling competition, and Mr. Williams believed his painting would help him learn. He continued, "I could also help him by doing word art with him."

I'll ask Lamar if he wants to participate in the spelling bee, Mrs. Wedderburn remarked, adding, "That's a great idea. He would need to study a lot because the exam is only three weeks away, she said.
