To all my students and their families

This is Jamie. Jamie is so excited for her first day of second grade. She has missed her friend Layla all summer and can't wait to see her. She is even more excited to see her because her parents cannot stop fighting at home.

Of course the first person Jamie wanted to see was her best friend Layla. Layla and Jamie have been friends since kindergarten. Jamie tells Layla everything that has been happening at home and Layla assures her that adults do that sometimes and that it won't last forever.

Jamie had a great first day of school and was ready to go home. She was so happy Layla made her feel better and Jamie had hope that when she got home everything would be better and that there would be no more fighting.

As soon as Jamie got home, Archie, the house dog, went right up to her and licked her face and it gave Jamie a huge smile on her face. That smile didn't last long though. Jamie could hear her mom and dad having a disagreement again and she just didn't understand. A few seconds later Jamie's dad kissed her on her forehead and walked out the door. Jamie started to cry, and quickly ran to her room.

A few minutes later, Jamie's mom came into her room and talked to her about what was happening. Jamie asked her mom if it was something she did and her mom told her of course not! Jamie's mom explained to her that some mom and dad's fight, and some parents are better separated. She reassured Jamie that no matter what happens, her mom and dad still love her very much. They just can't live together anymore. Jamie's mom hugged her real tight and then left her bedroom.

Jamie sat in her room for a while and thought about everything that was going on. She cried for a while and thought about how nothing would ever be the same again. She just wanted to be able to see her parents everyday and share about her day with them like she always did. She decided that all of this was enough for one day so she headed to bed.
