I dedicate this book to the scientists and researchers at NASA. Most all of the information contained in this book was derived from NASA's website. The website is full of exciting and educational information. Real-time images of our solar system are connected to beautiful image galleries. The links to explorations are endless and offer a multitude of information. Every child should visit this website and explore our galaxy from this perspective. I dedicate this book to the researchers and educators, who have made this website possible.

WHAT IS A PLANET
In 2006, a group of scientists got together to create a new definition of a planet. (This is when Pluto got kicked out). This definition got a little crazy and scientific, many people were confused. Even the people who tried to make it simple, created a complicated definition of a planet. Basically, in very simple terms: a planet is an object (one of its kind) with enough gravity to make it round and orbit around the Sun. This round, gravitational object is the only boss of its area and is the biggest of its similar neighbors. There can't be too many, as in the case of Pluto, or it won't be powerful enough to be the boss. There are currently, 8 big, round, gravity-controlling, bosses in our solar system! - Kortlin Jaber,

A mnemonic (ne-monic) is a way of memorizing the order of certain things, by creating a catchy phrase to help memorize the order.
AS OF THE YEAR 2022
THERE WERE 8 "NAMED" PLANETS
1. Mercury.
2. Venus
3. Earth
4. Mars
5. Jupiter
6. Saturn
7. Uranus
8. Neptune
AS OF THE YEAR 2022
THERE IS ONE EXTRA PLANET
YET TO BE NAMED
THEY CALL IT
PLANET 9

I am the planet MERCURY,
the fastest and smallest planet.
PLANET 1: MERCURY (MY)
Mercury is an INNER PLANET. There are four inner planets. Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and is the fastest. Mercury is also a TERRESTRIAL PLANET, this means it is made of rock. Mercury does NOT have a moon. One day on Mercury is the same as 59 days on Earth, because Mercury has a slow ROTATION. A year on Mercury is only 88 days, because it has a fast REVOLUTION or ORBIT around the sun. We would get older almost 4 times faster on this planet. A ten year old on Earth, would be almost 40 years old on Mercury. Mercury is smaller than Earth's Moon. Mercury is named after the ROMAN GOD of SPEED.
I am Venus, I am the hottest planet!
PLANET 2: VENUS (VERY)
Venus is also an INSIDE PLANET. There are 4 inside planets. Just like Mercury, Venus is also a TERRESTRIAL PLANET, which means it is made of rock. While all of the planets in our solar system spin COUNTER-CLOCKWISE, Venus is the only planet that spins in the opposite direction. I am the hottest planet in our solar system. Venus has NO MOONS. Venus is slower than Mercury but faster than Earth, a year on Venus takes 225 days. Do you know how long a year is on Earth?
Venus is named after THE ROMAN GODDESS OF LOVE!
I am the only planet NOT named after a Greek or Roman God or Goddess.
This picture was taken from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). Can you see the continent Africa? Can you spot the Sahara Desert?
PLANET 3: EARTH (EDUCATED)
Earth is our home planet. Earth is also a TERRESTRIAL PLANET, made of rock. Earth is also one of 4 INNER PLANETS. If you guessed 365 days in a year, you were close. There are actually 365 days and a quarter of a day (6 hours) each year. There are 24 hours in a day on Earth. Did you know, Earth is the only planet with water on the SURFACE? Earth is also the only planet that we know of to be INHABITED by human beings. Earth is the only planet in our solar system NOT named after a Greek or Roman God. Earth means "The Ground" in several languages around the world. The Earth has one MOON.
My nickname is the RED PLANET because I am covered with iron in my soil that OXIDIZES, giving it a red appearance.
I am the planet MARS, I have had the most visitors from space landings. Scientists want to know if we can live on Mars some day.
PLANET 4: MARS (MOTHER)
Mars is the last of the INNER and TERRESTRIAL PLANETS. It is very Dusty and really cold on Mars because it has a thin ATMOSPHERE. Billions of years ago it was much warmer because the ATMOSPHERE was thicker. Mars has 2 MOONS. On mars we would be almost twice as young as on Earth because there are 687 Earth days in a year. A day on Mars is almost the same as a day on Earth. One day on Mars is just a little over 24 hours.
Mars is named after THE ROMAN GOD OF WAR.
This red dot is a giant storm, twice the size of EARTH.
I am the biggest planet in the solar system. I am twice the size of all the planets combined.
PLANET 5: JUPITER (JUST)
Jupiter is the first of the OUTER PLANETS. The outer planets are also GASSY PLANETS. Jupiter is twice as big as all of the planets in our solar system combined. The red dot in the center is a storm that his been raging for over 100 years. This storm is twice the size of Earth. It takes 11 Earth years to go around the Sun. Jupiter has 79 MOONS.
Jupiter means KING OF THE ROMAN GODS.
I have the second shortest day of the planets. One day is 10.7 hours.
One year on my planet is the same as 29 years on your planet, Earth.
PLANET 6: SATURN (SERVED)
Saturn is the 2nd largest planet in our solar system. Saturn is an OUTER PLANET and also a GASSY PLANET. Saturn has 53 known moons and 29 awaiting to be confirmed. That is a total of 82 moons and 7 rings. The rings of Saturn are made up of ice and rock. One day on Saturn is approximately 10 hours. However, one year is 10,759 days on Earth.
Saturn is named after the Roman God of Agriculture and Wealth.
