Her mother told her she would grow to be very big and strong and reassured her that even as a baby she was prancing around only an hour after she was born (8). The baby elephant grew a little happier after hearing this.

However, one day when all the baby elephants were learning how to use their trunks, the baby elephant made water spray all over herself and others. The other baby elephants teased her and told her “that trunks have many purposes (3) and that’s not one of them.” The baby elephant went home feeling sad and angry. Her mother held her and said “there is nothing wrong with a little water. You are strong, you have thick skin (5), you will find your way.”

She warned her mother, but her mother said “it is probably nothing, go back to practicing using your trunk.” The baby elephant didn’t feel right, so she decided to look for herself. As she looked around the herds home, she saw that there were humans coming in the distance and they didn’t look friendly. She went quickly to her mother to warn her.

Her mother went to where the baby elephant saw the humans. When the baby elephant looked at her mothers face she saw that it was frightened. The mother told her to go and warn the herd to leave and that she would stay back until every elephant was gone.
