Thrown Off the Train - South Africa
In the year of 1893, Gandhi, a lawyer at the time, is on a train, on his way to handle a case. Though he had purchased a first-class ticket, he was told to move to the back of the train since he was not white. Gandhi refuses to move back and is thrown off the train.
Burning the Passes - South Africa
At the time, those who were Indian or Black had to carry passes that were considered as proper. In 1908, there was a symbolic protest where Gandhi burned those passes. Though he was beaten by officers, he continued to burn the passes.
Life in India
In the year 1915, Gandhi is living in an Ashram with his family, going from a middle-class lifestyle to a third-class lifestyle. Parts of India were wealthy, some were crowded and unsanitary.
New laws were also made: All Indians must be fingerprinted, no marriage other than a Christian marriage is valid, and policemen may enter the dwelling of an Indian as they pleased.
Amritsar Massacre - India
On April 13, 1919, peaceful protesters were gathered at Jallianwala Bagh, a square near the Sikh Golden Temple of Amritsar, unaware of the new law. Protests were not allowed, peaceful or not. British troops came and began to fire their guns. 1,516 casualties and 1,650 bullets.
Day of Fasting and Prayer - India
In 1919, Gandhi organized a general strike, a day where no one would go to work. This day was dedicated to fasting and praying and was a form of protesting. Gandhi would later be arrested for sedition, the action of going against a government.
