Thrown Off the Train

In 1893, Gandhi was accused of not paying for his first-class train ticket to South Africa.  The train conductors did not believe there were colored attorneys.  So they told him to go to the back of the train, and conductors called him a kaffir.  And when he refused to go to the back of the train, the conductors kicked him off.  Gandhi was racially attacked, and this led to his protests.

Burning the Passes

South Africa was practicing segregation and would give all Indians a pass.  Only Indians in South Africa were carrying the passes.  In 1908, Gandhi organized a revolt where he burned his family's passes.  He would gather many people to burn their passes.  But he could only burn his family's passes after getting beaten.

State of India/Ashram Life/Poverty in India

An ashram is a community of Indians.  Ashrams consist of multiple families that share chores and living spaces.  Many of the poor communities lived in these communities to lower expenses.  India has more poor areas than wealthy.  There are not many developed places in India.  Gandhi lived in a ashram community from 1915-1918.

Day of Fasting and Prayer/General Strike/Amritsar Massacre

Gandhi established a day of fasting and prayer where nobody would work in 1919. Because nobody worked, everybody would be shocked, and the military would have to work jobs that included telegraphs. This event angered the government.  The Amritsar Massacre would occur because there was a protest in a confined space where a British leader would tell his soldiers to fire. This atrocity resulted in the death of 1516 civilians, including women and children.

Protesters/Police Killed/ Gandhi's Fast

After the massacre, people who protested got beaten by the police. Soon after this, the protesters began attacking the officers. Police would get targeted and killed, which made Gandhi upset because he didn't believe violence could solve their problems. And he would go on a fast that would get everybody worried and stop the rioting.
