During the month of December, we wrote and decorated Christmas cards, sent some crafts and exchanged them with our new friends. For this reason, we decided to share some customs and traditions from our countries and let our partners know them. Here you are some pictures from our countries, as well as some vocabulary related to Christmas in our mother tongue.

Christmas in Sweden

Advent
When it’s four Sundays left before Christmas Eve, we light the first of four candles in our advent candlestick. We starts to decorate our homes for Christmas.
December 1
This day starts the Advent calendar in the Swedish Television. One episode each day until December 24th. Most of the children have calendars' of their own at home! This is also the day that our own little ef Nisse arrives at our preschool, together with his girlfriend Nissa and his dog Ludde.

This is Nisse, Ludde and Nissa!
December 13
This day we celebrate Lucia. Lucia celebrations are very much associated with song and music. Many schools and preschools, celebrate with “Lucia trains” with Lucia’s, terns, Santa's, gingerbread men and star boys. But if this day is on a Saturday or Sunday, the schools celebrate a day near by!
Close to this day, we have a Christmas party in our Preschool and we dress up in Christmas clothes!

December 24
Christmas Eve, Santa Clause comes to us, often in the evening and then we open our Christmas gifts.
This is a day when we mostly are together with our families, in our ow home or at grandparents, aunt’s and uncles, etc. And 15.00 is an important time, then most of us gather around the TV and we watch Donald Duck and his friends. It’s a tradition who’s been going on since 1960!

The food on the Christmas table:
On Christmas Eve, we eat a lot of food. On the Christmas table you may find Christmas ham, meatballs, , Salomon, grilled ribs, prince sausage, potatoes, and a lot of other things!

January 13
On the 13th of January it’s a tradition in Sweden to dance out Christmas.
We sing and dance around our Christmas tree, if there's some candy in the tree we’re now allowed to eat them. We’re “lotting the Christmas tree” and then we take away the tree until next Christmas!
December 25
Christmas Day is also mostly a day for families. We stay at home or maybe visit grandparents or other relatives.
Children plays with their
Christmas presents.

Christmas in Portugal
Decoration
Our Christmas decorations start at the beginning of December.
The most used decorations are the
Christmas tree with various decorations and a shining star on top; multicolored lights illuminating the houses inside and outside;
Christmas calendars and chocolates in the shape of Father Christmas are also sold.

Christmas eve meal
Usually, at Christmas eve dinner, we get together with the family.
The main meal is usually cod with boiled potatoes or octopus with boiled potatoes.
The traditional Portuguese desserts are "rabanadas", "aletria", "formigos" and homemade cakes.
After the meal we wait until midnight to exchange gifts.

Christmas Lunch
It is traditional on Christmas Day to eat the same food as the day before, but cooked in a different way as "old clothes" or lamb. Desserts are also part of the meal.

Games
Usually, after dinner and lunch, we play "Bingo", "Mikado", "Domino" and cards.
Christmas, in Portugal, is celebrated at home, in family, celebrating live, talking, eating, having fun, playing and sharing gifts.

Christmas in France

En décembre , notre village est décoré.
On prépare le sapin à l'école.

J'aime construire mes nouveaux jouets.
J'adore le festin de Noël.

Christmas in Italy

In Italy on 8th December we start decorating the Christmas tree and we build up the nativity "presepe" in our homes and in our schools. There are "presepi" also in our churches and shops.
L' 8 dicembre abbiamo preparato il presepe
all' ingresso della nostra scuola.
