Introduction



These are the three estates. The third estate is the poorest and the first estate is the richest.

This is the Bourgeoisie. It's the middle class.

These are the peasants or the third class.

This is when the monarchy went bankrupt or ran out of money.

This is when the Enlightenment happened. Basically when all new ideas started coming.

This is King Louis XVI. During this time he was having money problems which was bad for the country.

Revolution Begins: Estates General
The Estates General was a governing body in France. The king would call meetings to change laws within the country.


Revolution Begins: Voting by Order Vs. Voting by Head
Vote by order meant that the nobles and clergy could outvote the commons while vote by head meant that everyone had one vote and no one could outvote another unless by fair rules.

The National Assembly was a group of people that resembled a nation that helped make the rules of the country.
Revolution Begins: Tennis Court Oath

The third estate was being forced to disband so they moved to an indoor tennis court and took an oath to never separate until a written constitution had been established.
The People Take Charge: The Bastille

The Bastille was designed during the hundred years war to protect the eastern entrance to Paris. It was a massive building meant to keep enemies away.
The People Take Charge: Equality, Liberty, Fraternity
Equality, liberty, and fraternity were the most famous words of the French Revolution. It means that men and women are born and remain free and are equal in rights.


The People Take Charge: Versailles

The Treaty of Versailles was a document signed by Germany and its allies that stated Germany pays the money it owes, disarms, loses land, and gives up land overseas.
The People Take Charge: Bread Riot

Women thought that the price for bread wasn't fair. The riots weren't violent and wanted bakers to sell bread at a fair price that everyone could afford.

The People Take Charge: Great Fear

The Great Fear of the French Revolution was a period of time that the peasants rioted because the King and privileged people wanted to overthrow the Third Estate.
Taking on the World: Consitution of 1791

The Constitution of 1791 was created by the National Assembly during the French Revolution. It limited the power of the King and made the Monarch only a title and they had no authority.
Taking on the World: Limited Monarchy

The Limited Monarchy was established by a constitution and stated that there was a clear separation of powers in which the King was to name his ministers.
Taking on the World: State Control of the Church

During this period of time, the state started to take control of the Church. This caused a lot of people to riot because they wanted separation of church and state.
Taking on the World: War With Austria and Prussia

The French Revolutionary Wars were wars that lasted from 1792- 1802. France declared war against Austria in 1792 because of changes in the French Revolution.
Taking on the World: Emigres

Emigres were people who fled France in the French Revolution of 1789. Some of these people plotted against the Revolutionary government seeking help from other countries to restore the old regime.
The King Must Go!: The King & Queen Flee

The King and Queen fled France during the French Revolution to escape their punishments but also because of their lack of faith in the revolution, his personal religious beliefs, and urging his wife.
The King Must Go!: Captured at the Border

The King and Queen were captured by the people and forced to go back to Paris. They did this to make sure that the bread prices were fair and that the Revolution would continue.
The King Must Go!: The National Convention

The National Convention was elected to provide a new constitution for the country after the overthrow of the government.
The King Must Go!: Sans-Culottes
The Sans Culottes were the common people of the lower classes in the late 18th century France. Some became radical because of the poor quality of life.
The King Must Go!: Jacobins

The Jacobins were members of a political group during the French Revolution. They plotted on the downfall of the King and rise of the French Republic.
The King Must Go!: Off with His Head
The King got accused of treason which is assisting enemies in war. After he was accused of treason, he was condemned to death and decapitated.
Desperate Measures: The Committee of Public Safety
The Committee of Public Safety was created by the National Convention in 1793 with the intent to defend the nation and oversee new functions of the executive government.
