Episode 1: The lost wand
One sunny afternoon Tomek was going home from school when suddenly he
heard something in the bushes. He thought it was wind but then he saw
some gold light and a tiny creature jumped out of the green. She was
wearing a pink dress and had long, curly, blond hair. She looked very sad.
- Who are you? – I asked.
- I’m Anabella. And what’s your name?
- I’m Tomek… Oh no…. Anabella, why are you crying?
- Because some bad wizard stole my magic wand and I can’t come back to
Fairyland.
- Don’t worry. I’ll help you.
- You know, the wizard is playing a game with me. He told me to start
looking for the wand on the highest Polish mountain. Do you know where it
is?
- Of course, we have to take the train to Zakopane. It leaves in 30 minutes.
Quickly, let’s go!
They jumped on the train and started the journey. Zakopane greeted them
with cold and snow.

- We can’t climb Rysy in such weather – said Tomek.
- Well, I have three magic spells to use. Here is one!
Jump and jump, hop and hop,
mountain wind, take us to the top!
And up they went! They tried to find the wand on the top, but there was only a
piece of paper, which said:
Go to the city which was started by a fisherman called Wars
and a mermaid named Sawa.
Anabella worried:
- Wars? Sawa? What does he mean? – she asked.
- I know!!! Warszawa – it’s the capital of Poland. Come on, let’s go there,
use your magic spell!
- But I have only two left. Let’s go down, the weather isn’t that bad any
more.
And so they started to climb down. It wasn’t easy. And, what’s worse, it
started to get dark.
- I’m cold and hungry - complained the fairy.
- Me too, and I think we are lost - added terrified Tomek.
- Oh no, what are we going to do now?

They walked in silence, sad and tired. Suddenly they saw something. They thought it
was a bear.
- Run away, it’s a bear! – shouted the boy.
- No, no, look, it’s only a dog - replied Anabella - and started to stroke the dog,
which was very friendly - Look, he is trying to show us the way!
They followed the dog and got to a little house in the forest. They were lucky. There
was an old highlander making goat cheese. The‘oscypek’was delicious! They drank
hot tea and went to sleep. The next day the highlander took them to the railway
station and they went to Warsaw…

Episode 2: Travelling to the Past
Tomek and Anabella arrived in Warsaw in the middle of a hail storm. Anabella was
tiny and frail and the hail was hurting her. Tomek had to do something soon,
Anabella was about to faint.
He suddenly saw a big, old, stone building across the street.

It was the National Library. He at once made up his mind, they should go into
the library, right away. They would find shelter and food in it.
As soon as they got in, Anabella, felt a lot better. The place was warm and
silent.
- Let’s get something to eat from the vending machine, she suggested.
- OK, I’m starving, too. Let’s get some potato crisps and a sandwich,
Tomek replied.
There was a vending machine at a corner of the entrance hall and they put in
some money to get their snacks.
Out came a big bag of crisps first and then Tomek stretched out his right
hand to get his sandwich that was coming out next.
-What’s this? , he exclaimed.
-This is not my ham and cheese sandwich!! . It’s only a ………… piece of
paper!!
Tomek was holding the piece of paper in his hand when Anabella started
shouting ‘Read it, read it!!’
- OK, OK, Tomek said.
The note on the paper wrote: ‘Scrape and listen’
-Scrape the paper now! , Anabella shouted to Tomek.
He was scraping over and over and nothing happened. They were both
disappointed.

Suddenly, a strange man showed up in front of them.
He was tall, well-built and had blue eyes. He looked very clever and polite
and Anabella thought she had seen him before, but she didn’t know where.
- Are you ready to participate in the ancient Olympic Games? , he asked
looking at them straight in the eyes.
- If you are, then you will win your pink, wooden wand back, but if you
lose…………….
The man disappeared in the sky without finishing his sentence, leaving
Tomek and Anabella wondering.
As they were still amazed by what had just happened, an old serious looking
librarian appeared.
-May I help you? , he asked them politely.
-Yes, we want some information about ancient Greece and the Olympic
games.
-Well, I see. Please follow me.
They followed him through long and dusty corridors to a dark room full of
books .The librarian gave them a big old book and asked them to sit down
and read.
They opened it but they …………………… couldn’t see anything. The book was
so dusty they had to blow the pages the one after the other in order to be
able to read.

After spending some time behind this thick book, they realized that the man they
saw was actually ……………..Zeus, the father of Gods according to Greek mythology!!
They were shocked! .They also found out that the Olympic Games took place in
Greece for the first time ever , in a famous Greek city called Olympia, in 776B.C.
-Remember what Zeus told us, if we want to get the wand back we should
participate and win in the Ancient Olympic Games, Anabella said very worried.
-Which means we should travel back to time, to the year 776 B.C.!!
- We can’t do that! Nobody travels back to time, Anabella, shouted.

As soon as she said that, sparks came out of the open book in front of them and a
powerful force pulled them inside the book! The book swallowed them both and took
them back to Ancient Greece, to ancient Athens.
They landed on the Acropolis of Athens, where the magnificent marble temple of
Goddess Athena, the Parthenon, was built.
Tomek and Anabella looked around in amazement.
-Wow, they exclaimed. What is this? It looks fantastic!
-We must be in Ancient Greece! But …… who is this man coming up the hill?
A man dressed in a white long, robe was approaching them.
- ‘Eureka!!!’, the man said, which means ‘I found it out’
-You must be Archymedes the Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor,
and astronomer, Tomek said.
-We are Tomek and Anabella and come from the future!
-That’s not possible!, Archymedes said , he shook his head , turned his back to them
and left.
They stared at each other and wanted to shout out, but they were both tired and
hungry and above all they had to go to Ancient Olympia and participate in the
Olympic Games!!.
-Let’s find a place to eat and ask how we can get to Olympia, Tomek suggested.

They started getting down Acropolis hill and they soon found a little tavern
where they had some goat cheese, olives, figs and grapes to eat.
Anabella then remembered.
- I have another magic spell. We can use it to get to Olympia at no time!!
- Let’s do it then, Tomek agreed.
At no time at all, the spell did its magic and they were immediately found
outside a huge building. It had no windows and there were many marble
pillars along both its sides.
- We saw this building in the old dusty book in Warsaw library, it’s the temple
of Zeus, in Olympia, Tomek shouted.
- That’s why Zeus, told us to come here. Anabella said smiling.
- OK, then, we are finally in the place where the Olympic Games started, but
what are we going to do now?, Tomek asked worried .

Episode 3: The Games
- We have to sign up for the Olympic games, decided Anabella. Look, there are
some muscular men, let’s follow them.
Tomek and Anabella went after the heroes and joined a queue to sign up for the
games. But it wasn’t that simple.
- What are you doing here? - asked the man registering competitors.
- We want to take part in the games, answered Tomek.
- What?!!! You?!! Ha ha ha!!! And in these funny clothes? Is it a joke? You’re too
short and too weak. Look at the competitors, you have no chances.
- Don’t be so sure, we’ll take part and we’ll win! - said Anabella proudly.
- All right then, we’re going to have a lot of fun, ha ha ha!!!
The first competition was a 100-hundred-metre race. Tomek stood next to the
runners at the start line. He was chewing his favourite mint gum to forget about the
stress when BOOM!!! he heard the gong starting the race. He got so startled that
the chewing gum fell out of his mouth, just under the feet of one of the runners!
Then everything happened very quickly: the gum stuck to the feet of the runner
and he fell down, then all the other runners tripped over him and fell down as well.
But Tomek somehow managed to run between the fallen competitors and … he was
the first at the finish line!
- Brilliant, shouted Anabella happily, well done Tomek, we’ve won!!! Hurray!!!
They were absolutely happy. But there came time for the next competition. It was
the javelin. And the joy was over.

- Oh no, I can’t throw the javelin, we need help, said upset Tomek.
- Don’t worry, I’ll help you, said suddenly a strange man that appeared in front
of them.
He had fair hair, little wings at his shoes and looked very familiar.
- I know you! - exclaimed Tomek. You’re Hermes, the messenger of gods.
- Yes, and I have good news for you. Here is a special javelin for you. It’s lighter
than other javelins, you’ll definitely win throwing it.
- Oh, it’s so beautiful, a real work of art, thank you very much, said excited
Anabella. She looked at Hermes, but there was no sign of him, he disappeared!
- Anyway, it’s very nice of you, added Tomek with a big smile on his face.
But it wasn’t that nice… The gods were afraid that Tomek and Anabella might
win again and they had their favourites among the heroes. They wanted them
to win. Besides, Zeus didn’t want to say goodbye to the lovely pink wand that
the wizard gave him one day. Although he didn’t know how to use it, it looked
nice on the shelf next to his bed. Yes, he invited Anabella and Tomek to Greece,
but it was only because he was so bored and wanted a little fun. He didn’t
expect that things may go completely against his plan. That’s why, acting on
advice of other gods, he asked Poseydon to prepare a special javelin for Tomek,
which looked shiny and nice, but was actually heavier and worse than all the
other javelins!

- Stupid kid - he thought - I can’t wait to see the look on your face
when your javelin won’t go any further than only a few metres. Ha, ha,
ha!
However, he didn’t know that his plan was going to fail. Because…
- Boy! Where did you get that javelin? It’s too beautiful to you, it’s
me who should have it! – said a muscular competitor to Tomek, who
was holding his precious gift. He grabbed the javelin from the boy’s
hands.
- But… it’s mine, you can’t steal it like this, said Tomek with anger.
- I can do what I want! Are you stronger than me? No! So be quiet,
kid! – answered the man and walked away.
- Oh, no, what are we going to do now? Anabella was in tears.
The competition started. Anabella and Tomek observed the nasty
competitor approaching the line with their beautiful javelin.
- Look at this! - said the competitor grabbing the javelin in his mighty
hands.
He was as tall as a mountain and threw the javelin with ease, but… it
went only a few metres… The next competitor also wanted to throw the
most beautiful javelin in the world and also scored no more than a few
metres, and so did the next one and the next one, until it was finally
Tomek’s turn.

- Come on Tomek, don’t give up, do your best! – shouted Anabella
encouragingly. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
‘I’d prefer one of your magic spells’ thought Tomek, knowing that the only thing
he could count on was his arms, and anger. The heroes didn’t want to give him
back the shiny javelin, so he took an old wooden one. He gathered all his
strength and threw the poorly looking javelin in the air… And guess what? He
won!!!
The gods were furious! Their perfect plot was a disaster. Zeus called Hermes to
his Olympian palace.
- You have disappointed me, it was such a simple thing, I can never rely on
you! I wanted them to lose, but they have won two competitions!!! What are we
going to do now?! – he shouted.
Hermes stood quietly listening to angry Zeus, he didn’t dare to speak, but then
an idea came to his mind…

Episode 4: Tomek and Anabella face more dangers
Hermes looked at Zeus with a glimpse in his eyes. ‘I have an idea!’ he said. ‘I
know who can beat Tomek and Anabella’.
As you are aware of, they come from Poland so we will bring here a Polish God
to face them!’
‘Yes, you are right, Hermes!’ said Zeus smiling, ‘But who is this God going to
be?’
‘Do you remember, Perun?’, ‘I’m sure he will come to help us, if you ask him to.’
‘Yes!’ Zeus agreed, ‘I should bring him here before it is too late!’

Then, he said some strange words, that sounded like a poem and God Perun
appeared among some colourful smokes.
‘God Perun’, Zeus said ‘Welcome to Greece!’, ‘I brought you here because we need
your help, urgently!’
‘Of course I will help you, Zeus, but what exactly do you want from me?’
‘You should compete with an enemy of mine in an Olympic game and you should
win!’

‘OK, I will do it, if it pleases you, dear Zeus.’ answered Perun, a bit puzzled,
though.
At the same time, Tomek and Anabella were doing some working up. Tomek
was not nervous like the first time, because he knew that his opponent was
not considerable. But he didn’t know what was expecting him! ........
Just before the next game was about to start, opponents took their places.
Tomek looked at the skinny man in front of him. The game was boxing. He
was sure that he would be able to beat him.
Suddenly, out of the blue, some colourful smokes appeared and the skinny
opponent disappeared!. In his place, Tomek saw in amazement, the
magnificent God Perun of Poland!!
The referees said nothing because they were part of Zeus’ plan. Tomek and
Anabella were in a state of shock!.Tomek looked Perun straight in his eyes
with a begging look. As if he was saying ‘please spare me!’.
Then, the unexpected happened. Perun disappeared in a cloud of smoke
again and vanished with the same speed as he had appeared! A voice was
only heard from far away: ‘You are the winner, you deserve to get the magic
wand back!’ It was Perun’s voice, who at the last moment realized the
injustice of the situation and decided to leave.

Tomek and Anabella were thrilled. There were no more opponents for
them. They had won the Games and they deserved to get their wand back.
They had done what Zeus had asked from them. They travelled back to
time to get to Ancient Olympia and had participated in the Games. Their
misfortunes should now end!
But still they didn’t know where to look for the wand and Zeus was
nowhere around, not even Hermes, his messenger.
They started thinking about where to look for the wand, but they couldn’t
figure out an answer. Hours passed and the moon rose in the night sky.
Suddenly, they felt something surrounding them. They looked around and
saw golden sparks all around!. It was just like the moment they had gone
back to time but this time it was a bit different. They realized that they
were transferred back to the present! This time things were different
though. In the middle of their return trip they stopped in a world which
they had never seen before. There was nothing, just white endless sky, air
and ground.
