To my dear cousin Vicky Lemus who arrived in 2013 from El Salvador. She came at the age of 18 and went through different challenges but always found a way to triumph. Now, she is a Registered Nurse and resides in Rochester, Minnesota with her husband and two children.

One day a young girl named "Vicky" and her parents decided to leave their home country "El Salvador" in pursuit of a better opportunity in the United States. Their destination would be: "Houston, TX."

Becky, who was born in Houston was excited to meet her cousin Vicky who would soon arrive and live with them for some time. As the days passed, Vicky and her parents reached their destination. Now, they were finally going to meet for the first time in their lives.

"Hola!" Mucho gusto.

"Hola!" Nice to meet you.
The cousins quickly got along and went off to play. Soon, there was talk between the parents that Vicky would be starting school where Becky attended. Both girls cheered and could not wait until the next day.
The next day both cousins headed to school together. As they approached the entrance, Becky saw her friends waving and calling her name: "Good morning Becky!" Becky quickly turned around to greet them and was anxious to introduce them to her lovely cousin Vicky.

" Who is this?" asked Mary and Jessica. Becky answered: "Girls, this is my cousin Vicky, who has just arrived from El Salvador. She will be coming to this school from now on." There was a short silence, as Mary and Jessica stared at Vicky up and down with disapproval. Becky said: "What is the matter? We have another friend in our group."

Vicky was left with the impression that they did not like her. Becky explained that they were just surprised because they had never met someone from another country. Vicky thought to herself:

"I sure hope so. I will prove that I am no different than them and will fit right in."
The next day Vicky asked Becky to borrow some clothes to look as one of them. Becky responded: "Vicky you do not have to prove yourself to anyone. Just be yourself!" Vicky responded with a shaky voice and teary eyes: "No, because I know I embarrass you as well with my clothes, the food, I take for lunch, my hair, etc...."

Becky was surprised to hear this and responded: "At the beginning, I was embarrassed by your way of dressing, eating, and your person in general but I realized that you are my culture and I have actually learned many things." Vicky looked up in shock and said: "How is it possible that your parents have never spoken to you about their childhood?
