I am 13 years old and I live in
Virginia.

Today I heard from my parents about John O’Sullivan’s
article about America’s destiny. He said that “we are the
nation of progress,” and that our “nation [has a fixed]
destiny,” but we “are shut out from the life-giving light of
truth.” His words really made me think, and I realized that
moving west, exploring, and investing in more land truly
was our manifest destiny (like he calls it), but basically our
nations fate. My family is going to follow the others
through the vast mountains into other lands. We believe
that adventure is the best thing for a person, and my
father wants to start a new life where people have not
created rules and beliefs that are not fair to some. Though
I am not sure what I will encounter, I am prepared to face
the hardships. I still have so many questions about the
journey though…

There was lots gossip around town today. Besides the
usual rumors about frivolous girls and naughty boys, it
was mostly about the Alamo. I know only what I have
heard, but I believe that the Texans were right to stand
up to Santa Ana and conquer the Mexican troupes. It was
so wrong for Santa Ana to have killed ALL people at the
Alamo. He has not heart, and a cold mind. “It’s good that
we now have even more land under our control though,”
is what Father said to Mother this evening, and that “it
will be easier to move through different lands because we
have allies in Mexico.” I believe that this was all good for
our country. Because we now have “friends/allies” in
Mexico, more land, and more unity throughout our lands.
I’m glad that people are now getting along more.

Everyone has been talking all the time about Oregon Fever!
And how we should all leave and go to the sunny places and
open land. It’s so exciting to hear about all the wonderful
things that people are experiencing and being able to do! I
think that this is all important because some people want to
start fresh, and it gives others a whole new look on life
(moving west that is)! It’s great to be adventurous and it will
be so much better when we are all more spread out. With all
the talk about Oregon Fever, the town has also been talking
about what the decision makers of the country call the
Treaty of 1846. I’ve heard that it was about either fighting
over Oregon or having half of it. I think that we should not
go to war because we have been recovering from a war that
was really hard on all the people. If we can only have half
than we should take it! It would still be more land. Just like
what I had written about the annexation of Texas and the
Alamo, there is no reason for us to always be fighting.
