The Monster Under the Bed
By: Leah Shea

My mommy comes into my room and grabs a book from my bookshelf and reads me to sleep.
I wake up in the morning and I head downstairs to see my mommy and daddy sitting at the table.
My mommy specially made a stack of pancakes with a slab of butter for me.

After I finish my yummy breakfast, I dart to my room and get ready for school.
After getting ready, I grab my backpack with my lunchbox, and walk to the bus stop with my mommy.

As I wait for the bus, I start to feel my palms sweat, my tummy starts to shake, and I don’t know why. I start to feel afraid.
I hold tightly onto mommy’s hand.
I hear the bus rumbling and turning the corner.
As the bus arrives, I start to feel worse and worse. I feel sick and my tummy hurts.
The bus driver opens the doors, and they slowly squeak and hiss at me.

I climb onto the bus as my mommy leaves to go home. Little faces stare at me.
I feel redness appearing on my face as if I am catching on fire. And then I slowly walk to my seat on the bus.

As I arrive at school, I slowly drag my feet to the classroom door.
I try really hard to walk into the classroom, but it feels like my tummy is going to explode.

Classroom #1

I run to the nurse's office and start crying for my mommy.
And soon after, she arrives to pick me up.
My mommy hugs me, and tells me everything is going to be okay.

As my mommy takes me home, I start to feel
guilty for not staying at school.
Then I say to my mom, “Why do I feel this icky feeling in my tummy?”
Mommy responds, “Well, when your stomach starts to feel like there is a knot in it, it's called nervousness.”
Finally, I get to my house. I go straight to my room and hide under the covers of my bed and cry.
I start thinking about what my mommy said to me on the way home.
I feel so embarrassed that all the other kids probably saw me run to the nurse’s office.

My mom brings my dinner into my room so I can calm down for tomorrow.
I only eat a few bites of dinner because I am super scared to go back to school.
Shortly after eating, I try dozing off to sleep.
My mommy comes into my room and tucks me in for the night.

The morning finally comes, and I nervously get dressed and head downstairs.
My mom prepares my favorite meal of the day. Again. Three fluffy pancakes with a slab of butter on top.
After I finish eating all those buttery pancakes, I grab my backpack and lunchbox and head to the bus stop.

As I walk with mommy, I start to feel that feeling that my mom calls being “nervous.”
My legs are shaky, and I feel a drop of sweat roll down my forehead and hit my lunchbox.
The bus finally arrives. I feel so embarrassed to go back onto the bus where all the kids from my class saw me run to the nurse’s office.
I look down at my shoes while I am walking to my seat.
