Truman was a five-year-old alien that went to school on planet earth. Truman saw how all the kids would wear clothes, so he did too. He always put on a big, black hat to hide his antennas. Truman did not have a lot of friends, so he would always sit alone during lunchtime. He did not know why none of the kids would not play with him. It made him sad.
(Exposition)
One day when Truman was waiting at the bus stop, a boy with a mean face stomped up to him.
"Hi Jacob!" Truman waved, smiling.
The boy with the angry face, Jacob, did not respond. Instead, he stole Truman's hat off of his head, and laughed.
"Your antennas are so funny, so is your name! You will never be a human, like me," Jacob teased.
All of the kids at the bus stop agreed, and giggled at Truman's antennas.
(Conflict Introduced)
Truman started to cry his big, blue tears because of what Jacob had said to him. Truman took back his hat, and ran all the way back home wondering, What did it even mean to be human?
Truman could not answer it himself, but he was ready to try and find out.
He packed a sandwich and camera into his backpack, and threw it in his orange UFO.
"I got this...I think," Truman whispered to himself, while putting his black hat back on top of his head.
First, Truman flew all the way to India, where he met a group of men walking along the street.
"Why are you wearing that hat?," one of them asked.
Truman took the hat off his hands and held it in front of the man, Truman said "It makes me feel more like a human."
The man laughed at him. "You don't need a hat to be human. You just need to have good karma!" ("Karma").
"Karma?" Truman questioned.
One of the man's friends explained "It's in our Hindu beliefs, it means that we should always do good things to live a good life." ("The Purpose").
The other friend shouted "And when you do something good, it makes you in control of your own life, kid." ("Karma and Dharma").
(Rising Action 1)
Just then, Truman heard a woman on the street crying. He turned and saw her with no food, just sitting by herself. She looked dirty and hungry.
Truman remembered what the Hindu men taught him. His stomach growled as he reached for his backpack and pulled out a sandwich he made in the morning.
"For you," he told the woman.
She took a big bite and started to smile, "Thank you young boy. Do you want to share?"
Even though he was hungry, Truman did not take a bite, he was happy watching the crying woman have a smile on her face. He took a picture of them both smiling on the ground. ("Karma and Dharma").
"You are a good person, good things will come back to you, even if you do not ask for it," the woman told him ("Karma and Dharma").
(Rising Action 2)
Jumping back into his UFO, Truman stared at the lands all around earth. He chose to go to the West and landed in a small place called Israel.
After walking around a few buildings, he bumped into a man with big eyes.
"Sorry sir...I did not mean to hit you, it is just so small in this place," Truman apologized.
"I forgive you, boy, but what is SMALL? We may be a small country," the man yelled, "but we are people with big heart!" ("The World's").
"What do you mean by that?" Truman was confused.
"People like me are called Jews, and when bad things happen to Jews, we know it is not punishment, but a lesson. We learn from the bad." the man replied (Smith).
"How can you not be sad after bad things happened to you, sir?" Truman was now curious.
The man's eyes were wide, "Well, we read something called the Torah, it teaches us that we must forgive" ('The World's").
"Just like you forgave me for bumping into you!" Truman connected.
The Jewish man nodded, "Yes like that. We even have a day for forgiving, Yom Kippur, it helps us let go of the bad things that have happened." ("The World's").
The man touched Truman's shoulder, and reminded him, "Forgiving is important, but so is defending yourself, son." (Loewenthal).
"Why do you say that? Shouldn't we be all peaceful?" Truman asked.
The Jewish man closed his eyes and said "It's true, but if somebody is not peaceful first, we have to put ourself first," he paused, "Remember, your life is worth so much, that is why you have to protect it!" (Loewenthal).
Truman laughed and gave the man a big hug, snapped a picture on his camera, then skipped back to his UFO. Truman thought about the bus stop, and then noticed, he was not so mad about it anymore.
(Rising Action 3)
While flying over to the South, Truman noticed a lot of commotion below. He chose to land his UFO to see what was happening.
Running quickly, Truman noticed a man holding something that looked like money.
"What's that?" Truman tapped the man's shoulder.
"Hello, what is your name?" the man asked him.
Truman told him "I'm Truman! What is that for?"
"Truman, such a special name. This is for a naming ceremony actually, we call it Isomoloruko" ("Different").
"Who calls it that? Why are you celebrating a name?" Truman did not understand.
"My people, the Yoruba, hold a celebration to give a name to a baby," the man spoke soft, "not just any name...but one with a good meaning, like your name, Truman!" ("Different").
"My name does not mean anything, right?" Truman did not know this.
The man was shocked, "Truman is somebody who is loyal, it means you are a good friend, and person."
"Oh...I did not know," Truman admitted.
"That's okay, most people do not know about their names either. Here with the Yoruba, we make sure each name is good, because names are lived out." ("Yoruba").
"Lived out?" Truman wanted to know more.
The man laughed, "Yes, it means your name will take you through your whole life." ("Different").
"Well who chooses the names? My parents chose mine!" Truman yelled.
"Every family is different. Parents can choose, but most of us have money," the man said, and held up the coins in his hand, "then we put it in a bowl so we can help choose!" (Soetan).
Truman smiled at this, taking a picture of the money, "What will you choose for the baby, sir?"
"I might just choose Truman," he told him, then walked away.
