ABC book of Bottle-Nose
Dolphins
By: Carolina Diez-de-Onate
& Mrs.Miguel's Kindergarten
class.

Aa
Bottle-nose dolphins are AQUATIC mammals
that live in the water all of their lives.

Bb
The BLOWHOLE is at the very top of their head.
This hole is what allows them to breath air.

Cc
A baby dolphin is called a CALF. The calf and the
mother will spend many months, sometimes a
year, together before the baby can swim off on
their own.

Dd
a Bottle-nose dolphin's DORSAL fin is the fin on
their back. This is what you will see when the
dolphin is swimming at the top of the water.

Ee
The EYES on a Bottle-nose dolphin are located
on the sides of their heads.

Ff
Dolphins have two FLUKE's at end of thier tails.
Without the flukes they would not be able to
swim.

Gg
Bottle-nose Dolphins swim in GROUPS of 2-15.
These group sizes may change depending on the
depth and temperature of the waters.

Hh
To find food Bottle-nose dolphins HUNT.
They trap their prey and take turns eating
their food.

Ii
Bottle-nose dolphins are very INTELLIGENT.
They have a larger brain than humans!

Jj
When you watch a dolphin
for long enough you will
most likely see it JUMP at
some point. Dolphins jump
for many reasons: to play,
to breath, to communicate,
to get rid of parasites, and
to get a better view of the
water.

Kk
Bottle-nose Dolphins can swim as fast as 50
KILOMETERS an hour, which is about 20 mph.
They cannot go much faster than this.

Ll
Bottle-nose dolphins get as big as 6.6 to 13
feet LONG! That's about the length of two
people stacked on top of each other!

Mm
The rounded part of a dolphins forehead is
called the MELON.

Nn
Bottlenose dolphins communicate with each
other through NOISES. This noise you will
hear them make is a whistling sound.

Oo
You can find a Bottle-nose dolphin living in
in the OCEAN. The water is their only
home all their lives.

Pp
A Bottle-nose Dolphin's PECTORAL fins are
the fins on the bottom of their body. These
fins act like their arms and helps them
swim.

Bottle-nose Dolphins are not very QUICK.
Bottle-nose dolphins typically swim at 3 to
7 miles per hour. But they can go over 20
miles per hour when they work really hard.

Rr
The ROSTRUM is the rounded part of the
Bottle-nose Dolphin's mouth.

Ss
The color of a Bottle-nose dolphin's skin is
SILVER.
