She looked up at him, his cute freckled face looking back at her. She smiled warmly and they continued with
their conversation. Many different things were discussed, since they barely knew each other and had met by chance at
the pool one time. Grace was 10, Blake was 12. Sara was 7, she was their little friend. The only reason Grace and Blake
had met was because of Sara. Grace knew she one day would have to thank Sara greatly for that, if she ever got the
chance.
When Grace had first met Blake she had someone else on her mind. A stubborn boy who was very athletic
and at the time his hair stuck up in a cute way. She had a crush on him, as every young girl in 4th grade has to like
someone.
After Grace met Blake she realized she had no idea what she saw in the other boy. He was idiotic. Nothing in
him she loved; just a simple little girl crush that she quickly learned from. The first time she saw Blake she had thought
of him, but as she got accustomed to Blake’s kind nature she realized that she defiantly truly liked Blake.

After that she looked forward to every time after she met him. She saw him at swim practices
that her brother and Sara did. He would stop by for the free swim afterward. She saw him when he was
preforming plays. He always seemed to be amazing, even though Grace did complain that the first time
she met him he squished an innocent lighting bug.
Grace’s friend had a friend that was in Blake’s school, and she decided to use that as a slight
advantage. She knew it was mean, but her long times away from Blake were agitating. She quickly
found out that Blake liked another girl in her school. That was devastating to her, but she did not give
up. She had to prove she was better.
Grace started the swim team the next year. She worked hard the first week and a half. On
Thursday, something was wrong. She tried to get out of bed but she was dizzy and tired. Her
temperature was high, and she was very shaky when she finally got out of bed and made it down stairs.
Grace tried to ignore the increasing headache before she went to school.
In the car she thought she would vomit, but she told herself it would pass. “You look very pale”,
her mom said. “I am fine”, she replied. As she walked slowly into the building a wave of exhaustion hit
her, and she fell over unconscious.

The next thing she knew she was in the emergency hospital, her parents were outside, and they were talking to someone.
Neither of them sounded happy. They sounded hopeful, even though Grace could not make out exactly what they were saying. Then the
other person spoke, and her parents went silent. They entered the room and hugged Grace close.
“What happened to me?” Grace asked once they had sat down. They both had tears in their eyes. A nurse entered and started
checking Grace over. “You passed out”, her mom told her. “Why?” She questioned knowing her parents didn't want to answer. There
was a lump in Grace’s throat. What was wrong with her? What she going to be okay? Her parents didn't reply until the nurse left the
room. “You have a horrible sickness”, her dad said slowly carefully choosing his words. She knew it was something that was probably
incurable, but she checked to be sure before she started guessing. “It can’t be cured can it?” They shook their head. Cancer; that was
the first thing that came to her mind. She knew lots about cancer as her dream was to become a veterinarian and she started studying
so she could maybe one day become a very smart one. Maybe she would never be a veterinarian. “I-is it cancer?” She asked nervously
already knowing the answer deep down in her heart. Her parents hesitated, and she knew the answer. A tear swelled in her right eye.
She knew she would never have a future.

She wept, and her parents tried to comfort her but it took a while for her to calm down. “Will I have
chemotherapy?” She asked. “Yes, we are starting it in a few days. For now you need to rest and get ready”,
her mom told her trying to sound comforting.
So she did, as she did she thought of Blake. She wondered if she was ever going to see him again.
Her brother didn't seem to understand the term cancer, and he was very jealous of all the attention given
to Grace. Grace had lots of time to think, probably too much. She saw all her friends the 5 days leading to
the start of chemotherapy. She wished she would see them more often, and even better Blake, but they had
to go.
Chemotherapy was horrible, Grace hated it and she was very sick. 24/7 she was either vomiting or not
moving. Her family and friends helped her through the first round of treatment. After another one she
was beginning to feel better. She knew how to better deal with it too.
She had 3 months to go home, and spend time doing other things. She still had to be careful since
she was still sick and ill. She went to swim practice but didn't swim. She sadly watched the other kids
work hard and show they could win the race when the time came. School exhausted and after a week she
could no longer attend school. It was horrible after that. She felt worse than before and she barely moved
from the couch.

One day, she was laying watching a comedy show on the TV. She didn’t realize that something was
going to surprise her. A few cars pulled into her drive way slowly and quietly, but her dog and neither her
noticed. After a minute, many people burst through the garage door and the front door and yelled,
“SURPRISE”! Grace sat up instantly and a grin grew across her face. Her whole class was filing in to her
house, even her teacher! She hugged everyone and answered their questions about her cancer and how she
felt. Of course the guy she once liked asked, “Is it contagious”, and one of her best friends told him, “what?
NO!” Grace said “don’t worry it’s not contagious”, and after a while everyone was in good spirits. Grace was
guilty about how much school she missed, and she tried to discuss with her friends what she should do to finish
up her life. A few hours passed, and everyone has to go. Grace told them good bye sadly, but glad that they
came.
She had a new idea of how she wanted to finish her life. She gathered all her money, and began to do
small fundraising things like lemonade stands. She finally got enough money and grouped it into piles of $200
and $100. She was donating to endangered animals.
After that was over she had to go back to the hospital. The third round of treatment was not too much,
but the fourth was worse than ever before. Even after the treatments Grace felt worse. She wished she could
see Blake, but she began to lose the hope and energy to ask. After the strongest fifth round yet, she was sent
back home. She tried to make the best of her life because she had the sinking feeling she didn’t have more
than a year to 3 months.
