This is Sana, and she lives in
Korphe, Pakistan. Today is her first day
at school. Before, her village didn't have
a school, but one recently had opened.

This is Greg. He's who made it possible for
Sana to go to school. He arrived in her village
after a failed attempt to climb
K2, a mountain in Pakistan. It's one of the
hardest mountains to climb in the world.

Greg was welcomed by Haji Ali, the village chief. When
Greg arrived he was in terrible shape, and Haji Ali and
the community nursed him back to health.

Greg was very touched by the generosity of the
people. He saw that they had very little, but took
care of him anyways, even though he was a
complete stranger. He knew he had to repay them
in some way.

And so he tried to think of what he
could give them.

Greg looked around the village, and heard the
children's voices. He realized that Korphe
didn't have a school. The children would share
a teacher with another village, and they would
only come a few days a week.
Greg felt determined to bring a school here so
that the children could get an education.

And so, Greg said goodbye to Haji Ali, now
a good friend of his. He promised to return
to build a school, even if he wasn't sure
how as of yet. Greg just knew he had to.

True to his word, Greg returned, and together
with the village of Korphe, built a school. It took a
lot longer than Sana expected, but she was happy
just to see it here. She knew that without it here,
she would not have gone to school.

Sana knew there was a cycle. Girls did not go
to school, they would get married young, and
then have many kids, and it would repeat over
and over.

Many girls in her village did not
go to school, and were uneducated. There
are a lot of
gender roles in her village - the idea that
the women would stay home to take
care of the family and the men
would go to work.
Her family encouraged her to go to school
and Sana was excited for it.

Sana was proud she was going to school.
Every night she studied hard and worked hard
because she knew the power an education
would give her.
