Rene Tenasco Ashkàbewis, a council member of Kitigàn Zìbì Anishinàbeg, wrote The Otter in 1993. The story has been passed down through generations of the Anishinàbeg people and was written down by Tenasco. The Anishinabeg, moreover known as the Ojibwe are a tribe with a rich cultural heritage that spans centuries. This indigenous group originally inhabited the Great Lakes region of North America. The Anishinabeg people have a deep connection to their land and hold profound respect for nature. Traditional teachings emphasize harmony with the environment and the importance of maintaining a balanced relationship with all living beings. The story shows the creation of the earth by the Great Spirit, and how it came to be. The great spirit created the earth and later wanted to put humans on the earth, so he called a meeting with the other spirits and asked how they could assist the humans on earth. The guardian spirit of the otter offered to help the humans by working together in a group with harmony and teaching them how to protect their families and grow in peace. The Great Spirit approved of the Otter's request and chose the Otter to be the guardian of unity for the Anishinàbeg. The story is culturally relevant to the Anishinàbeg people as it projects their beliefs about the creation of the earth and the role of the spirits in helping the people. The story also shows the importance of working together and living in harmony with each other and the earth. The literary device used in the story is personification, where the Otter is given human-like qualities such as character and nature. The performer, Joan Tenasco, narrates the story in a way that stays true to the traditional telling of the story. Her voice is clear and steady, and she speaks with reverence for the story and its cultural significance. The piece stands out for its simplicity and powerful message of unity and harmony.

The great spirit decided to create humans for his earth, however he wanted to get some of the spirits to help them out by teaching them how to live and adapt. He asked for a spirit that could lead his humans. The guardian spirits came up with ideas that could help the humans.
