What is an Environmental Engineer?

What is an Environmental Engineer?
An Environmental Engineer, also known as an Ecological Engineer, work to improve
our environment and solve problems that might come from pollution, population, global
warming or natural events. Environmental Engineers use all areas of science to solve
problems especially biology and chemistry.
Environmental Engineers work all over the world with different cultures and in different
environments; in one place they might work on preventing erosion, in another helping
people get fresh, clean drinking water. They might help large factories help control the
air pollution they produce or help them use their resources better. Environmental
Engineers help design buildings and even are involved with making your favorite sports
more enjoyable. Environmental Engineers help people while helping the environment.

The U.S Department of Labor has a handbook that lists how you can
become an Environmental Engineer. Studying in school, especially in
science and math is a great start. After high school there are plenty of
universities that offer degrees in Environmental Engineering. Getting
experience is also important, so joining science clubs and getting
involved in community service projects are good for you and good for
your community.
The U.S. Department of Labor also lists qualities of an Environmental
Engineer besides education. Reading and writing are important skills.
Getting along with others and being able to solve problems are also
very important.
A good imagination is probably one of the most important qualities;
Environmental Engineers have to use their imagination to design and
invent solutions to the challenges they face.

Environmental Engineering in Everyday Life

Environmental Engineering in Everyday Life
Environmental Engineers are working on making homes, office
buildings, and factories energy efficient and eco-friendly. One office
building in Seattle, Washington called the Bullitt Center, will use 26
geothermal wells for heat and cooling. Geothermal energy we get from
the heat inside the Earth. The Bullitt Center will have solar panels,
recycled construction materials, and even non-flushing toilets that turn
human waste to compost.
In Serbia Environmental Engineers built a tower that is purposely
designed to be hit by lightning and looks like something from a sci-fi
movie. When the building, named Hydra, is struck by lightning it stores
the energy it gets from the lightning in batteries. The energy from the
batteries is then used to separate hydrogen from water and the
hydrogen is used for energy. Wow, free energy from lightning and
water!

In the Basque region of Spain a new car called the Hiriko (which
means “urban”) is being released on the streets. The Hiriko is 100%
electric. The car can actually fold itself to fit into small parking spaces.
In the United States General Motors is working on the EN-V (Electric
Networked Vehicle); drivers will be able to use their smartphones to
call the car to them instead of walking to the car. Environmental
Engineers are “driving us” into the future.
You can look through your school books and magazines at home and
find examples of the work of Environmental Engineers all over the
world; every dam, skyscraper, or factory has probably hired an
Environmental Engineer to make sure that they aren't harming the
environment.

Environmental Engineering in Sports

Environmental Engineering in Sports
Environmental Engineers are helping people enjoy their time off by
making sports more enjoyable. In Sweden Environmental Engineers are
working to create an indoor winter wonder-bland that will last year
round. Skipark360 will be an indoor arena where people can enjoy ice
hockey, skiing, and slalom racing. Along with having a 150 foot wide,
600 foot long indoor ski slope, the arena will create its own snow and run
on renewable energy.
The country of Qatar will be hosting the 2022 World Cup soccer
tournament. Qatar gets very hot in the summer and Environmental
Engineers had to come up with a way to keep players cool; their
solution, a remote-controlled, solar powered “cloud.” The cloud will look
something like a flying saucer and will hover over the arena to keep the
players and fans cool in the 115 degree heat.

Environmental Engineers are helping The Philadelphia Eagles to go
green with their stadium. They are spending $30 million to remodel the
stadium. The stadium will have 80 wind-turbines, 2,500 solar panels, and
installing a bio-diesel/natural gas power plant.
If the Philadelphia Eagles wanted to make things even greener they
could use the invention of Tom Broadbent. Mr. Broadbent invented a
system that generates electricity each time you flush the toilet. Actually,
the system is set up in the drain of a house, each time someone takes a
shower, runs a sink, or flushes a toilet the water (and other stuff) going
through the pipe turn a turbine which powers a generator.
From making it snow indoors, to electric clouds, from lightning power to
toilet power, Environmental Engineers are making our world a cleaner,
greener, and much more interesting place to live.
