Lila is a young woman of 18 and every day, after helping her mother with the baking, she rides her bike to the nearby farm where she works as a groomer to the horses. She brushed their manes and fed them carrots. She felt a special bond with them as if they understood her better than anyone else. Lila’s family lived on a small farm in rural America in 1916. Her father was a carpenter who built houses and furniture for the townsfolk. Her mother was a baker who sold pies and cakes at the local market. Her brother Peter worked at a mill he got paid
handsomely and helped out a lot with the
needs of the family. They were not rich, but they were happy.
Lila smiled as she hugged her father goodbye every morning, grateful for his hard work and love. Lila had a dream of seeing the world beyond the farm. She wanted to travel to exotic places, meet new people, and have adventures. She had read books and magazines about foreign lands and cultures and longed to experience them for herself. Lila had always loved baking and learned a lot from her mother. She decided to take a chance and apply for a job in New York City, sending them some samples of her bread and cakes, along with a letter describing her passion and experience. The letter said they were impressed by her work and wanted to hire her. They offered her a good salary, a place to stay,
They knew how much she loved their farm and her friends, and they wondered how she would adjust to such a different lifestyle. They also didn't want to lose their only daughter "Lila, are you sure you want to do this? Yes Dad I'm sure. This is my dream. Please don't be sad I'll come back and visit you often. I love you all so much, said Lila. We love you Lila, and we're proud of you. We want you to be safe and happy and where you're going we won't be able to do that. They hugged her and gave her their blessing. Lila thanked them and went to pack her bags. She had a lot to do before she left for New York.
She hoped everyone would understand why she had to leave. She wrote back to the bakery accepting their offer and telling them she could start in two weeks. She sealed the envelope and brought it to the general store where they mailed it to New York. She felt a mixture of sadness, joy, nervousness, and hope. She went into her room to find Peter standing there with tears in his eyes, if you leave he said then I can't protect you I don't want you to get hurt. Lila hugged him and said don't worry I'll send you a letter every time I remember Peter smiled, hugged her, and said you better write back to mine.
Chapter 2
"Lila spent the next two weeks in a whirlwind of activity. She said her goodbyes during the day and packed at night, preparing for her new life in New York City. Her friends threw her a farewell party filled with laughter, tears, and promises to keep in touch. Finally, the day came for Lila to leave. She stood at the train station with her bag in hand, looking back at the small town she had called home all her life. A pang of sadness hit her, but she was also thrilled for the adventure that awaited her. As she stepped off the train in New York City, Lila felt nervous. She had never been to a big city before, and everything seemed so overwhelming.
The crowds, noise, and smells were all so different from what she was used to in the quiet countryside. As she walked down the street towards the bakery where she would be working, Lila felt out of place. Everyone around her seemed to be in such a hurry, rushing off to work or running errands. Lila felt like she was moving in slow motion. When she finally arrived at the bakery, she took a deep breath and pushed open the door. The smell of fresh bread and pastries filled her nostrils, and she felt a surge of excitement. This was where she belonged. Noah was one of the bakers who showed Lila around and helped her make some of his recipes for French bread.
They got along well, and Noah offered to walk Lila to an apartment where she could stay after work one day. Lila thought about her parents and her friends the whole night anytime she would almost drift off she would remember that she was in New York and suddenly spring awake, so it was a long night for her.
Chapter 3
"Lila had been in New York for a week since Noah had walked her home. Lila went to work at the bakery with a happy heart. She looked across the bakery and saw Noah. She enjoyed spending time with him and felt happy when she was with him. Noah came up to her and they talked while they were working. Noah was from a town that was close to where Lila herself lived. Lila lived in Georgia before she came to New York, and Noah used to live in North Carolina. As they were working, Noah asked Lila if she wanted to go to a festival with him Lila said yes with a happy heart, and they went to all of the little shops. Lila enjoyed her time with Noah but felt unsure about her feelings for him.
They walked around the festival, trying different foods and playing games. They even won a stuffed animal at one of the booths. As the sun began to set, they sat down on a bench and watched the people go by. Noah turned to Lila and said, “I’m really glad we came here together.” Lila smiled but didn’t say anything in response. Noah took Lila’s hand in his, but Lila felt unsure about holding hands with him. She hesitated for a moment before taking his hand in hers. They sat there for a little while longer and enjoyed each other's company. After a little while Noah leaned forward and kissed Lila she was shocked and just looked into his brown eyes he was kind and handsome but Lila was embarrassed and turned away.
As they walked back to Lila’s apartment that night, Noah said, “I had a great time tonight. Would you like to go out with me again sometime?” Lila was too shy to say yes, after all, Lila had only met Noah a week ago and she knew that she had to think about it so she said I want to, but I'm really busy next week. Noah just smiled and said okay then I'll see you later. Lila felt guilty for saying no but she knew that Noah was a gentleman and wouldn't ask again until the time she had said was over. One day, while they were walking through Central Park, Noah turned to Lila and said, “I have something to tell you. I think I’m falling in love with you.” Lila felt her heart skip a beat as she looked into Noah’s eyes.
She didn’t want to hurt his feelings, but she knew that she needed to be honest with him. "Lila smiled and said, “I care for you too, but I think we should take things slow and get to know each other better before we get serious.”Lila smiled and said, “I care for you too, but I think we should take things slow and get to know each other better before we get serious.” I’m here for you no matter what.” Lila knew that she cared for him deeply, but she still wanted to figure out her feelings.
Chapter 4
"Lila was very confused about her feelings for Noah but as she was thinking on her walk back she ran into a man named Oliver they slammed into each other and Lila landed on top of Oliver. Are you okay Lila asked him. Lila helped Oliver up and brushed off his coat. She felt embarrassed for running into him, but she was also intrigued by this handsome stranger. “Thank you for asking,” Oliver said. “I’m fine. My name is Oliver. What’s yours?” “I’m Lila,” she replied with a smile. Oliver smiled back and said, “It’s nice to meet you, Lila. Are you new to the city?” Lila nodded and said, “Yes, I am. I’ve only been here for a few weeks.” Oliver looked at her curiously and said, “What brings you to New York?"
Lila hesitated momentarily before replying, “I came here to work at a bakery. It’s been quite an adventure so far.” Oliver looked at her sympathetically and said, “I can imagine. Especially with everything that’s going on in the world right now.” Lila nodded and said, “Yes, it’s been difficult. What about you? What do you do?” Oliver hesitated for a moment before replying, “I just joined the army.” Lila felt a pang of sadness as she realized that Oliver would be leaving soon. I’m sorry to hear that,” Lila said softly. “When do you leave?” “In a few weeks,” Oliver replied. “I’ll be stationed overseas for a while. Lila told Oliver all about her older brother who was overprotective, and they laughed about all the times Lila's brother had told her to stop doing such small things. Lila felt a mix of emotions as she looked into Oliver’s eyes.
to stop over small things. Lila felt a mix of emotions as she looked into Oliver’s eyes. She knew that she cared for Noah deeply, but she couldn't help being drawn to this charming stranger. Lila walked back to her apartment, feeling confused about her feelings for Noah and Oliver. She knew that she cared for Noah deeply, but she couldn’t help feeling drawn to Oliver’s charm and bravery. As she lay in bed that night, Lila thought about the two men in her life. She knew that she needed to decide her feelings soon, but she also knew that it wouldn’t be easy. Lila went home to find a letter from Peter under her door she hugged the letter and read it happily, he told her all the news from home he said he missed her just as much as her parents did.
Chapter 5
That next day Lila went to work early and on her way she saw Oliver he was dressed in his uniform. Oliver looked at her with a mix of sadness and fear. How are you she asked? “I’m doing okay,” he said. Lila felt a pang of sadness seeing Oliver in a uniform She knew that Oliver would be leaving soon and that she might never see him again. Oliver asked Lila if she wanted to go for a walk, but Lila had to go to work. They agreed to meet up later that day at six o’clock. When Oliver and Lila started talking, and they got on the subject of relationships and Oliver asked Lila if she was seeing anyone Lila told Oliver about Noah, and after she told him Oliver dropped the subject and Lila asked Oliver about his life before he came to New York.
him Oliver dropped the subject and Lila asked Oliver about his life before he came to New York. Oliver had come from a small farm in Alabama, and they talk about Oliver's sister named Bonnie who was two years older than Oliver. Oliver walked Lila to her apartment before walking to his apartment. Oliver felt jealous of Noah and tried to spend more time with Lila. He would show up unexpectedly at the bakery or her apartment, hoping to catch her alone. Lila was flattered by his attention, but she just didn't know what to do with Oliver and Noah. There were times when she wanted to kiss Oliver, but then she would see Noah she would just pretend like nothing ever happened.
One day, when Lila was working at the bakery, Noah stopped by to see her. He noticed that she seemed distracted and asked her what was wrong. Lila hesitated for a moment before replying, “It’s nothing. I’ve just been spending a lot of time with someone else lately.” Noah looked at her curiously. “Who?” “His name is Oliver,” Lila said. “I met him a few weeks ago in the park. He’s going to be leaving soon to fight in the war.” Noah looked surprised but understanding. “I see, he said softly. “And how do you feel about him?” Lila took a deep breath before replying, “I like him, but I’m not sure if I’m ready for a serious relationship with anyone right now.
Chapter 6
Lila spent the next few days trying to sort out her feelings for Noah and Oliver. She knew that she cared for both of them deeply, but she wasn’t sure if she was ready for a serious relationship with either of them. As she walked through the city, she saw signs and posters everywhere encouraging people to support the troops overseas. She felt a pang of sadness as she thought about Oliver, who would soon be leaving to fight in the war. Lila decided to invite both Noah and Oliver to a party at her apartment. She hoped that they could all get along and put their differences aside for one night. At first, the party was going well. Noah and Oliver were both charming and funny,
and Lila felt happy to be surrounded by them. But as the night wore on, tensions began to rise. Oliver tried to impress Lila by showing off his skills or knowledge in areas where Noah was lacking. Noah, meanwhile, grew more distant and quiet, watching from the sidelines as Oliver made his moves, Noah would come and talk to her for a minute then leave and was acting awkward. Lila felt torn between the two men. She cared for both of them deeply, but she didn’t know how to choose between them. As the party began to wind down, Lila said goodbye to both Noah and Oliver. She knew that she had a difficult decision ahead of her, but for now, she just wanted some time alone to think. After Noah and Oliver left Lila decided to write to her friend Iris
and ask her what she was doing and what to do with the two men who both liked her. Lila sat down at her desk and took out a pen and paper. She began to write a letter to her friend Iris, telling her about the two men in her life and asking for advice. “Dear Iris,” she wrote. “I hope this letter finds you well. I’m writing to you because I need your help. I’ve met two amazing guys, Noah and Oliver, and I don’t know what to do. They both like me, and I like them both, but I can’t decide which one to choose. What should I do?” Lila paused for a moment, thinking about how to express her feelings. She knew that Iris would understand, but she also didn’t want to burden her with her problems. “I know that you’re busy with your own life,”
she continued, “but I could use your advice right now. How did you know when you found the right guy? What should I be looking for? Please write back soon.” Lila sealed the envelope and put it in the mailbox. She felt a sense of relief knowing that she had reached out to someone for help. ver the next few days, Lila tried to keep busy with work and other activities. She went for long walks in the park, read books, and spent time with friends. But no matter what she did, she couldn’t stop thinking about Noah and Oliver. Finally, a letter arrived from Iris. Lila tore open the envelope and began to read. “Dear Lila,” the letter began. “I’m so sorry to hear that you’re struggling with this decision. It’s never easy to choose between two people you care about.
But here’s what I’ve learned over the years: when you find the right person, you just know. You feel it in your heart and your gut. You don’t have to force anything or try to make it work. It just does.” Lila felt a sense of comfort reading Iris’s words. She knew that she still had a difficult decision ahead of her, but she also knew that she would find the right path eventually. In Lila's response to Iris, she asked her if she wanted to come to New York. A few days went by and then a letter was sent to her from Iris it read I accept your invitation and I will be in New York as soon as possible, love Iris. Lila decided to write Peter and tell him about her life but she left out Oliver and Noah because she knew how he would react.
Chapter 7

Lila told Iris all about Noah and Oliver, and Iris listened patiently, offering advice when she could but Iris knew this was between her and the two men. As the days went by Lila and Iris went to all sorts of different places. They spent lots of time exploring the city together, visiting museums and art galleries, and trying new foods. Lila felt grateful to have such a good friend by her side. Meanwhile, Oliver was preparing to leave for war. Oliver was waiting for Lila to pick between Noah and him,
so Oliver told Lila nothing. Noah had also been giving Lila some space, he knew that she needed time to sort out her feelings, and he didn't want to put pressure on her. As Lila spent more time with Iris, she began to realize that she needed to decide between Noah and Oliver. She knew that she couldn't keep stringing them along forever. One day, as they were walking through Central Park, Iris turned to Lila and said, “You know what you need? You need a sign. Lila looked at her curiously. “A sign? Yes,” Iris replied. “Something that will tell you which guy is right for you. Something that will make it clear once and for all. Lila thought about this for a moment before replying, But how do I find a sign like that? Something that will help you with your decision.”
Chapter 8
As Lila looked across the street, she saw Oliver in his uniform he looked handsome and brave. Iris looked at where Lila was staring, and she knew that Lila loved him. “Go on,” said Iris. Just as Oliver was stepping onto his troopship, Lila ran up to him and kissed him. “I love you,” she said. “I know that now.” Oliver was still in shock, but when Lila explained what she meant, he understood. He whispered something in her ear before stepping on the ship.“I love you,” he called out to her. “I’ll write you all the time. Lila smiled through her tears as a huge steam horn blared. She saw Oliver being teased by his military friends and laughed as she waved him goodbye until she couldn't see him anymore.
Soon Lila was staring at a small dot in the whole ocean. Are you okay? asked Iris. Lila was so intent on looking at the ship that she didn't even hear Iris come to stand beside her, I'm okay she replied I just can't believe that I just now figured out that I love Oliver and now I won't see him until the war it over. I'm happy for you, said Iris okay? You're a friend said Lila I'm lucky to have you here. Well as much as I love being here with you I have to go home soon, I was thinking about leaving in two days. It was the day of Iris's departure and Lila was sad that she had to leave
but she understood Lila wanted to come and see her mother and father as soon as she could it was already getting into late fall and Lila wanted to come home for Christmas. Well, goodbye said Iris I hope you and Oliver will stay together, Iris paused for a minute and then started to talk again you had a better visit for Christmas I'll try said Lila, and have a good trip.
