Consists of a liquid electrolyte (lithium hexafluorophosphate and carbonate solvent) that travels between the poruses allowing the movement of lithium ions. Battery fully charged: lithium exists between the layers of the carbon graphite. Battery is discharged (not completely full but supplying energy) now lithium becomes lithium ions and electrons.

Recycling batteries mitigates the risk of environmental pollution. When batteries are collected and treated through proper recycling facilities, the hazardous components can be isolated and disposed of safely, preventing them from causing harm to the environment. The first step in battery recycling is the collection of them. Collection locations include local recycling centers, electronic retailers, and designated drop-off locations, serve as repositories for discarded batteries. Next, they go to the recycling facility, the batteries undergo a meticulous sorting process. Several types of batteries – alkaline, lithium-ion, nickel-cadmium, etc. – are separated to streamline the subsequent recycling steps. Upon reaching the recycling facility, the batteries undergo a meticulous sorting process.

After the separation, the batteries are mechanically broken down. Various techniques are employed to crush and shred the batteries, breaking them into smaller components. Valuable metals are extracted like cobalt, nickel, and copper are recovered, while hazardous materials like cadmium and mercury are isolated for safe disposal. The last and most crucial step is how the batteries will be reused. These materials can be reintegrated into the manufacturing process to produce new batteries, reducing the need for extracting raw materials and lessening the environmental impact of battery production

Lithium-ion batteries are very popular and widely used. Their long cycle life, energy density, and high discharge voltage make them a favorite among rechargeable batteries. These batteries are what you would find in an electric car, a phone, watches, solar power storage, power tools, even medical devices such as pacemakers. When these devices break or become obsolete, very few are recycled. Ninety-five percent of them will end up in a landfill becoming a hazard to that area. The five percent that are recycled can only produce secondary materials that cannot be reused in battery production. Additionally, companies often change or use different battery chemistry making a one size fits all approach difficult for chemists and engineers making recycling methods.

We are trying to make an effort to show the companies the damage that has been done and the chargeable batteries need to be the next step. They end up in the ocean leaking their harmful chemicals into the water, they end up in the roads where cars can run them over and set them off and explode. They end up in forests and woods where animals mistakenly eat them. Recycling batteries is so important to make sure the harmful chemicals and metals and electric charge don’t agitate the environment batteries often find themselves in. If we can’t recharge our batteries, we can at least recycle them properly so their materials can be reused.
