Welcome to Highland Middle School, home of the Vikings!

So many students before you have had such great experiences here, and now it is your turn! Graduating from Elementary School is a big deal, so we want to make sure you are taking advantage of all the wonderful things our school has to offer. Keep reading to learn more about our awesome school! 

Our School's History

Highland Middle School was founded in Harnett County, North Carolina near Buffalo Lake in 2014. There were 315 students when the school first opened. This year in the 2023-2024 school year, there are 942.

Fun Fact: Did you know that when Highland Middle School opened in 2014 that it was only sixth graders that year? The seventh and eigth-graders didn't start until the following year. 

Our Diverse Culture

Highland Middle School celebrates a rich cultural diversity within the school. Our school represents many different cultures, and we love learning new things about them! 

Fun Fact: We have many cultural events to encourage knowledge and growth of our students. Here are some students showing off their Hispanic Heritage Month projects! 

Getting to Know Our Community

Highland Middle School is in a rural area surrounded by rolling farmland. But we are not far from the city, mountains and ocean if we need a change of scenery sometimes!

Fun Fact: Did you know the name Highland comes from the immigrants who settled the area in the 1700's? They spoke Gaelic in this area until the late 1800's! 

Highland Through the Seasons

Our schools home state North Carolina has one of the best climates in the US! This is because we have lots of water activities nearby to enjoy in the summer like lakes and rivers; we get beautiful fall colors with fun pumpkin patches nearby; we get snow but not too much; and we get the most amazing spring blooms.

Fun Fact: Sometimes it feels like winter one day and then summer the next. The weather can't make up its own mind sometimes!
