- Ralph Waldo Emerson

The subway began filling up as it usually does every morning. But mixed in with people heading to work, school, or other appointments was a chicken. Yes, a chicken. There was a chicken on the subway.

There have been some weird people and other strange creatures on the subway before. But never a chicken. Everybody stared at the chicken not sure what to make of it. How did it get on the subway? Where was it going? Several passengers started to record the chicken on their iPhones while others tried to get a selfie with the fowl.

Some of the passengers began sharing different theories about how the chicken ended up on the subway. Maybe she ran away from a farm. But how could she have gotten downtown? Chickens don’t fly. Did she take an Uber to the subway? No, that was ridiculous. And besides where would she keep her wallet?

The more people talked about it, the more outrageous their ideas became. Things got so absurd that the passengers couldn’t help but start laughing at the situation. Then the chicken got up and started walking to the next subway car. Suddenly everybody went silent. The riders gasped as if someone had released a dangerous animal. It was only a chicken!

The chicken made its way to the next car where a new group of onlookers gawked at the bird. At the back of the car a group of hooligans were bullying a young boy. The chicken made its way towards the gang who looked on in disbelief. One goon tried to kick the chicken but missed and landed on his butt.
Gawked: looked with amazement

“I don’t like the way she’s looking at us” another bully whimpered. “Run!”
The boys immediately got off at the next stop and ran away. Like most bullies, these phony tough guys were just a group of ‘chickens.’ Sorry about the pun. I couldn’t resist.
The entire subway car applauded the chicken as she was on the move again walking through another pair of cars.
Whimpered: to cry or sob softly
