To all the resilient hearts facing towering mountains, may you find strength in unity and love in your community.

In a lively city full of activity, Mia and her mom lived in a small, cozy apartment where they laughed, loved, and dreamed together. Even though the family didn’t have a lot of money, their home was a peaceful, happy haven.
Mia was a creative and kind girl who loved drawing and reading. Her drawings depicted beautiful worlds, while her books took her to far-off imaginary places.

Mia's mom worked tirelessly at a nearby restaurant. Despite her fatigue, her warm smile never faded, bringing comfort to their small family.

As the city changed, life got harder. They didn't have much money, and everything was getting more expensive, making it really tough for them to afford things.
Mia’s mom had to make difficult decisions about how to spend her money. There wasn’t enough money to pay for everything and the choices made Mia’s mom feel stressed and frustrated.
Housing, rent, the electricity and water bill, and food. How can I get enough money?

Mia felt disheartened when she saw her neighborhood transform, with friends moving away due to financial strain.

Mia tried to make herself feel better by drawing lots of pictures showing a happier life. She drew scenes where everything is nice and wonderful, hoping it would help her feel happier too.
One day, a friend came to visit her at home. He saw Mia's painting and thought it is very unique. He told Mia about the community was hosting an art exhibition for students, so he suggested that Mia showcase her paintings there.

Mia's paintings were successfully displayed at the exhibition, which went as planned and attracted many visitors. Her paintings showed the world from a little girl's perspective and her view of the world, which drew a lot of admirers.

Mia's art sparked conversations, encouraging people to discuss the city's issues with compassion and understanding.
Yeah, we have to develop our community facilities.
I‘ll say we need to increase the lowest wage in the state, it's so hard for people who have low wages to survive

Mia was amazed by the number of people admiring her paintings. She never thought that she would one day receive so much admiration and appreciation. She took tons and tons of pictures and wanted to post them on social media.

Wow, that's a lot of people. I need to take a picture to send on my Ins!

Mia and her mother visited the community investigator, who took a closer look at the situation Mia's family is facing, and they met a lot of different people at the exhibition. There were neighbors in the same situation, and there were successful people who seemed to have a lot of money.

I worked all weeks but it still so hard for me to afford all the things.
Residents shared their personal stories, fostering a strong community bond and collective resolve to tackle their problems.

An expert on housing policy provided a solution, which required community to use some spare spaces to build some temporary houses. It inspired the community to take actionable steps.

We can use a small RV to set up a small living area in a spare place and sell it to these disadvantaged groups at a cheaper price than renting a whole house.

Some residents also wrote some suggestions to the government to talk about the living issues. The government took residents' feedback very seriously and contacted several local businesses. Local businesses joined in to help. They offered training for jobs and even hired people from the neighborhood. This made it easier for families to earn money and stay in their homes.

What about creating a garden, so that we can plant some flowers and vegetables to sell?
During the meeting, they also thought about how to reduce their financial burden in other ways, and to create as much wealth and opportunities as possible to earn more money and live a better life.

Mia's school started a program to teach kids about important issues. They learned about problems in the world like environmental issues and how they could help. Schools encouraged students to volunteer in the society, to make some posters and promoted environmental protection in their own community. It made them feel good to make a difference.
It is not easy to get the life we have now, and there are still many problems in the society that we do not understand

People in the neighborhood started having meetings regularly. They talked about what they needed and shared ideas with leaders. It made the neighborhood stronger because everyone worked together.
A buddy system was also set up in the neighborhood. Which meant that neighbors looked out for each other. They helped with groceries, chores, and anything else someone needed.

At the same time, the community slowly began to grow vegetables, fruits, and flowers on the surrounding hillsides and in the planned small planting areas. With the help of more and more people, the scale of small farms in the whole community gradually expanded.

Author Bio
My name is Lucas (Xuanting) Wan, a freshman at Pitzer College. I'm majoring in both Economics and Environmental Analysis. I'm from Beijing, China. This is the second year I have stayed in the US. I still remember the first few months I came here, everything was completely different. In China, there are not so many homeless people on the street, so I was shocked. Because we have different cultural backgrounds, so I paid much attention to it. I strongly believe this is an issue about human rights and social development, so all the members of society will benefit if we attach importance to homelessness and focus on the solution to the homeless problem
