The alarm went off and Doodle bounced out of bed almost
forgetting she was on the top bunk.
“Blue, Blue,” she yelled as she shook her brother awake.
“Hurry, get up! Today’s the day!”
“Huh, whaaa, what are you yelling at me for? That’s not very
nice,” grumbled Blue as he sat up in bed and rubbed his sleepy
eyes. “It’s not even light outside yet! What’s going on, Doodle?”
He demanded.
Doodle took a breath. She sat on the side of Blue’s bed and
tried to be patient. “Don’t you remember, silly? This morning
Gram arrives to take us camping! Camping on the beach! Don’t
you remember?”

Well, Blue’s eyes became wide, wide awake. Now he
remembered. Gram promised to take them camping on the beach!
He couldn’t imagine how that was done but he was so excited to
go on an adventure!
Quickly Doodle and Blue got dressed, rolled up their sleeping bags
and packed a few special items in their backpacks.
Mommy Dearie was already up and whispered to them (so as not
to wake the rest of the family) to come into the kitchen for
breakfast.
“You can’t go camping on an empty stomach,” Mommy Dearie
declared.

Doodle and Blue knew Mommy Dearie was right so they quickly
headed for the kitchen. As they ate their cereal and drank
their milk, they heard footsteps. Around the corner appeared
Gram. She had a silly hat on and along with a big grin declared
she was ready to go!
Excited yet trying to be quiet, they
hurriedly kissed Mommy Dearie, grabbed
their backpacks and sleeping bags and off
they went.
Gram was unusually quiet but Doodle and Blue chattered all the
way to the beach. It was about a half hour drive before Gram
stated she had found just the right spot!

The sun was just beginning to rise behind us
and made the water glisten. Doodle and Blue
grabbed what they could (it seemed like Gram
had packed lots and lots of stuff) and hurried to
keep up with Gram as she headed to the beach.

They stopped in their tracks. There in a little clearing,
under a little tree was a tent! Gram had been busy!
She was delighted that they were delighted and they
finished setting up camp.

“Now let’s establish some ground rules, kiddos,” Gram began.
“First of all, we stay together at all times, at all times. Right,
Blue?”
Well, Blue wasn’t sure why he was being singled out although he
did enjoy going off by himself to explore. But he agreed.
“And second,” Gram went on, “and this is most important, we
need to have fun and to learn something.” Gram seemed to have a
little gleam in her eye as she said this.

Now Doodle was confused. “Wait, what? Learn something?
Can’t we just have fun?”
“Oh Doodle,” Gram laughed. “Just you wait and see how
much fun we have and how much we learn. Just you wait.”
Doodle and Blue decided if Gram said so, it would be true
so they waited to see what would be next.

They looked around and there, not too far away was a lifeguard stand and
they felt safe because Mommy Dearie and Daddy Pie had always taught them
how helpful lifeguards could be.
Gram also explained that there was a policeman named Dan who patrolled this
beach at night, on horseback, after the lifeguard leaves. He will watch out
for them and keep them safe. This made Doodle and Blue smile!
So they played in the sand with Gram. And they played in the water, and they
went looking for seashells, and they got very, very hungry.

Gram had a big cooler full of
goodies. Doodle and Blue
helped set out a big blanket
and one chair for Gram. (It
was not always easy for
Gram to sit on the ground.)
Paper plates were handed out,
along with napkins. Peanut
butter sandwiches and Fritos
were supplied along with cups of
water. Everyone was so hungry
that each had two sandwiches! And
for dessert? Oreo cookies – the
double stuffed ones. Yum!

More playing and exploring came in the afternoon. Doodle and Blue
and Gram went on a sea-shell hunting expedition. They walked way
way down the beach and couldn’t even see their tent anymore. But
it didn’t matter because they had all the time in the world!
They walked out onto a pier and watched the fishermen at work.
The sound and sight of the waves flowing back and forth on the
pier was just delightful!
Someone started yelling! The three turned around to see five
dolphins, FIVE jumping and diving and swimming in the water right
next to the pier. It was a glorious sight, so fun! But then, more
yelling and pointing – to the beach. Everyone looked and there right
on the beach was a baby dolphin, flailing and stuck! Oh no!
Everyone on the beach and the pier (including Doodle, Blue and
Gram) ran to help.

It was important to keep the little fellow wet so while some kept
splashing water on him, the others pushed and pushed and pushed
the little guy and finally after what seemed quite a long time,
finally got him back in the water where a worried mama dolphin
was waiting to escort her baby back out to sea.
What excitement! And they were proud, Doodle, Blue and Gram
were. They had helped save the life of one of God’s beautiful
creatures. They had a story to share when they returned home
tomorrow.
The afternoon flew by quickly and they headed back to their
campsite, with their bucket full of fancy shells.
“I can’t wait to show Mommy Dearie and Daddy Pie all our
treasures!” declared Blue. He was so very proud, and rightly so,
of all those pretty seashells.

The three of them headed to the showers right behind the lifeguard stand.
They knew it was impossible to get off all the sand, especially since they
were still at the beach, but it felt really, really good, just the
same.Doodle noticed the lifeguard was gone so commented,
“We can't go in the water anymore tonight because
the lifeguard is not on duty. Right, Gram?”
“You are absolutely 100% correct, my little Snickerdoodle! We need
to get supper started anyway. There is much to do. Why don’t you
two gather some sticks while I get things ready?” Gram
suggested.Sticks were gathered and together they started a little
campfire.Gram brought out hot dogs and some of the sticks that weren’t
burned in the fire were used to cook them. Cherries and grapes were handed
out and Gram even had some nice cold milk
in her big cooler.
“These are the best hot dogs I’ve ever eaten!” declared Blue.
They all laughed.

Gram said to keep their sticks and then brought out marshmallows. Wow, hot
dogs AND marshmallows over the fire! Quite the treat indeed.
The sunset was lovely, actually the most beautiful they had ever seen. The
beach was now deserted except for Gram, Doodle and Blue.
